Dolphins Blockbuster Trade Idea Sends Quarterback to Arizona

After a free agency period that saw the Miami Dolphins tear down the roster, it is time for general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan to rebuild the team. Next up is perhaps the most important draft the team has had in recent memory. They currently hold seven selections inside of the first 100 picks, and with holes all over the roster, nailing those selections is crucial.

Miami amassed that draft capital primarily through trades. The team traded wide receiver Jaylen Waddle to the Denver Broncos in exchange for draft picks and also traded edge rusher Jaelan Phillips during the 2025 season for a third-round pick.

Prior to the Jaylen Waddle trade, Sullivan had told reporters that he was exploring the idea of adding more draft picks. The Dolphins will try to employ a draft-and-develop method to the team’s roster construction. As a result, a trade idea results in the Dolphins adding even more draft capital.

Potential Miami Dolphins Trade

In NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay’s latest mock draft, he predicted the Miami Dolphins would make a trade with the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals would give up their No. 34, No. 143 and No. 183 picks in exchange for Miami’s No. 30 pick, which Arizona would then use to select Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson, a potential Dolphins target.

That trade would leave the Dolphins with 13 draft picks while moving down only four spots.

Regarding Miami potentially getting more draft picks, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell argued that the Dolphins should exchange some of their current draft capital to try to obtain draft picks in the 2027 NFL Draft. Barnwell wrote:

“I’m instead arguing that the Dolphins should deal some of that bounty for 2027 picks, where they currently have only an extra fifth-rounder via Pittsburgh. This is partially about draft quality. Admittedly, the idea that next year’s draft is going to be better than this year’s class has become a bit of a running joke in NFL circles. We’re often overly optimistic about who will be entering the draft and how they’ll perform next season at the college level. With that being said, teams seem to be more excited about what might be on the table in 2027, especially at quarterback and on offense. The Dolphins probably will be in the market for one of those signal-callers, so maximizing their 2027 capital would make sense.”

Dolphins First Round Pick

If a trade does not occur, the Miami Dolphins are scheduled to pick at No. 11. For that pick, McShay predicted the Dolphins would draft LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane. McShay wrote:

“Delane is the best player available in this scenario, and Jeff Hafley would be thrilled to land him. The Virginia Tech transfer thrived in his lone season at LSU, developing into a true shutdown corner while excelling in both man and zone coverage. He’s exactly the type of versatile, high-IQ defensive back that Hafley values in his aggressive, disguise-heavy scheme that leans on mixed coverages.

What stands out most on Delane’s tape is his football intelligence—particularly how seamlessly he transitions from man to zone—along with how natural and effortless he looks when the ball is in the air. The testing backs it up, too, as the 6-foot, 187-pound corner boosted his stock with a high-4.3 run at LSU’s pro day.”
