Doc Rivers Gets Honest on Bucks’ Stunning Cam Thomas Move

The Milwaukee Bucks made a roster move ahead of their Monday, March 23, matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers.

After a brief stint, the Bucks decided to cut ties with the veteran guard, Cam Thomas.

The move sent shockwaves across the league, considering Thomas was a notable pickup for Milwaukee, following a dramatic trade deadline.

Not long after the Bucks made the decision to part ways with the standout scorer, Milwaukee’s head coach, Doc Rivers, addressed the move.

“It was just a tough one, honestly,” Rivers told reporters.

“We’ve run out of bodies, and at the end of the day, there are guys you have to make a decision on.”

Thomas appeared in 18 games for the Bucks. He came off the bench for each game, seeing the court for 16.6 minutes on average.

During his stint with the Bucks, Thomas shot 43.1% from the field and 27.5% from three to score 10.7 points per game. He also posted averages of 1.9 assists and 1.6 rebounds per game.

Judging Thomas’s time with the Bucks, Doc Rivers had a positive outlook. He even went as far as saying Thomas could be an option at a different time.

“I thought Cam was really good overall, and he may be somebody we revisit,” the head coach continued. “Just where we’re at right now, not really in the hunt as when we signed him, we thought it was the right thing to do for the rest of the guys right now.”

The Bucks Are Far Out Of The Hunt

When the Bucks picked up Thomas after the deadline, Giannis Antetokounmpo was recovering from a setback.

Milwaukee hoped to get Giannis back on the court so he could pair well with Thomas and make a push for the NBA Play-In Tournament.

Following Monday’s loss against the Clippers, the Bucks are 29-42 on the year. They are eight games out of the Play-In. The Charlotte Hornets have won seven of their last 10 games, showing no signs of slowing down.

Thomas wasn’t a game-changer for the Bucks. So, they opened up a spot on the roster to add Pete Nance, a developmental prospect with over 50 games of NBA experience.

The Next Move For Cam Thomas?

Thomas claimed that before he joined the Bucks, he had numerous suitors.

The veteran guard is certainly affordable, but he can’t be a member of a playoff roster. Unless a rebuilding team wants to give him a look before his unrestricted free agency in the summer, Thomas might have some time off between late March and July.
