Detroit Tigers Extend Top Rookie to 8-Year, $150 Million Contract

The Detroit Tigers have extended top rookie Kevin McGonigle to a record breaking 8-year, $150 million contract. The deal also includes escalators that could advance the total evaluation to $160 million. This surpasses Konnor Griffin’s previously historic nine year $140 million contract.

McGonigle entered 2026 as the number two overall prospect on Baseball America’s rankings. After Spring Training, he made the Opening Day roster for the Detroit Tigers. He has been as good as advertised so far in the Major Leagues, batting for .311/.417/.492 over 72 plate appearances in 17 games.

The contract extension pays through McGonigle’s arbitration years plus three years of free agency. However, the contract includes no options, so he will become a free agent in 2034 pending another contract extension down the line. If he is traded, the deal includes a $5 million assignment bonus. The deal does not include a no trade clause.

McGonigle was the 37th pick of the first round in the 2023 MLB draft.

Detroit Tigers Join the Shortstop Extension Party

The Detroit Tigers have joined the trend of extensions given to top shortstop prospects in the year 2026. Over the last few weeks, we have seen Griffin receive a nine year $140 million contract extension with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Seattle Mariners extended Colt Emerson to an eight year $95 million contract prior to the Griffin and McGonigle deals. The Milwaukee Brewers signed Cooper Pratt to an eight year $50.75 million extension before anyone could get to their top guys.

The difference between McGonigle’s extension and these other deals is that McGonigle has quickly proven his upside at the Major League level. Fangraphs graded McGonigle 65 potential hit tool, 55 potential game power, and 60 potential raw power on the prospect scale of 80. Clearly McGonigle is showcasing that ability already only a few weeks into the majors.

While the Tigers probably had to pay a premium for his commitment, these contracts historically are a bargain if they work out properly. Considering he has debuted already, this contract is more similar to that of Julio Rodriguez’s $210 million extension during the middle of his debut season in Seattle.

Potential Future Extensions at Shortstop

Leo De Vries Athletics

GettyLeo De Vries of the Athletics could be the next prospect to receive a massive deal.

In terms of other prospects who could receive a massive extension soon, there are a few names to take note of:

Leo De Vries of the Athletics is one player to keep in mind after they acquired him from the San Diego Padres for Mason Miller. Although the team has already signed current shortstop Jacob Miller to a seven year $70 million contract, they still view De Vries as a future cornerstone player.

The Brewers may extend Jesús Made despite the Pratt extension. They’ve historically been supportive of these types of deals especially with star player Jackson Chourio.

The St. Louis Cardinals are exploring an extension with their shortstop prospect JJ Wetherholt.

A couple other names to keep in mind are Sebastian Walcott of the Texas Rangers or Aidan Miller of the Philadelphia Phillies.
