Davis Webb Reveals True Feelings on Raiders Interview & Tom Brady

Now that the Super Bowl is set, the remaining teams with head coaching openings should be making their final decisions soon. While coaches on the Super Bowl teams can’t technically be hired yet, they can at least reach a verbal agreement.

The Las Vegas Raiders are in on a few candidates who were involved in the AFC and NFC Championship games, and now, coaches from the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Rams are free to hire.

Broncos’ offensive pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Davis Webb has been one of the most interesting candidates this cycle. He’s only been coaching for three years, but played quarterback for a long time at the NFL level. The Raiders did a virtual interview with him previously and are now speaking with him in person.

Candidates don’t often talk about their interviews, but CBS Sports’ Tracey Wolfson was at least able to get some brief thoughts on his interview with the Raiders and what it was like to chat with minority owner Tom Brady.

“Had a chance to speak with Davis Webb this week and in one conversation you can see why he’s a hot name,” Wolfson wrote on X. “Sean Payton hired him after one conversation. Webb enjoyed his first (interview) with Raiders and said talking with Brady was awesome. As for the Bills, his unique relationship with Josh could make Buffalo an interesting landing spot.”

Is Webb a Realistic Candidate?

Considering Webb’s lack of experience and the fact that he’s 31, it was fair to wonder if the Raiders only brought him in for information gathering purposes. However, it’s not now clear that he’s seriously in the mix to be the team’s next head coach.

He’s considered a rising star, and while it might take a couple of years for him to fully find his footing, the Raiders may want to bet on him early rather than miss out on him entirely. It’s a huge risk, but the Raiders have tried to play it safe, and it hasn’t worked out. If the team hires Webb and he flops, the worst thing that can happen is that they’re in the exact same situation they are almost every year this time next year.

Former Raider Praises Webb

There could be a perception that Webb is cutting in line and becoming a head coach too quickly, which might rub some players or coaches the wrong way. However, he might have the personality to put those worries to bed.

Former Raiders offensive lineman Jon Feliciano knows Webb well from when they played together. He thinks he’d be a home run hire as a head coach.

“[Webb] is a hell of a coach. He was the definition of a player-coach, especially [with the Giants], he was doing advanced scouting for the team that we would play the following week. … First few years [in Buffalo], he was all about doing the coach’s jobs,” Feliciano said on the “Yahoo Sports Daily” podcast. “I think Davis is going to be one of the best coaches in the league in the next decade. I’m not the only one.”
