Dave Roberts Sends Clear Message on Shohei Ohtani After 11-Strikeout Spring Finale

Shohei Ohtani closed out Spring Training with 11 strikeouts in a performance that carried far more weight than the box score alone.

The right-hander struck out 11 hitters over 4-plus innings against the Angels, finishing his final tune-up before the regular season with his sharpest outing of the spring. More importantly, he left the mound with a clear endorsement from Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.

The 11 strikeouts from Shohei Ohtani immediately stood out, but the outing revealed much more than just swing-and-miss stuff.

“He’s ready to go,” Roberts said.

For the Los Angeles Dodgers, that statement matters as much as the strikeouts.

A performance that checked the right boxes

Ohtani’s outing was not defined by one inning or one sequence. It was the consistency across his start that stood out.

He struck out the side in the opening frame, including both Zach Neto and Mike Trout, immediately setting the tone. From there, Ohtani continued to generate swings and misses while working through the Angels’ lineup with a mix that included his fastball and a breaking ball Roberts later pointed to as particularly effective.

By the time he exited in the fifth inning, Ohtani had recorded 11 strikeouts, allowed four hits and three runs, and walked two on 86 pitches.

The strikeout total will draw attention. The efficiency and pitch mix are what made the outing meaningful.

Roberts emphasized both after the game, noting that the intensity, focus and execution were all in place. He also pointed to Ohtani’s ability to use different pitches to disrupt hitters’ timing, a sign that his feel on the mound is trending in the right direction.

Why this outing matters right now

Spring Training performances are often evaluated cautiously, but context matters.

The Dodgers are currently navigating early rotation uncertainty, with both Blake Snell and Gavin Stone expected to miss time into the early part of the season. That reality limits the team’s flexibility and increases the importance of each available starter.

Roberts acknowledged that dynamic, explaining that the current staff situation makes it more difficult to create extra rest or adjust schedules.

That puts a sharper focus on Ohtani’s readiness.

Tuesday’s outing did not just show that he can get through a lineup. It showed that he is progressing toward handling meaningful innings at a time when the Dodgers will need them.

What “ready” looks like for Ohtani

There is still a structure to how the Dodgers plan to deploy Ohtani early in the season.

Roberts indicated a target in the range of 75 to 80 pitches for his initial outings. Ohtani reached 86 pitches in this appearance, a sign that he is already building toward that threshold.

Beyond pitch count, Ohtani also outlined what he views as a key benchmark for the season.

“I do see that as an important benchmark as a starting pitcher,” Ohtani said of reaching 25 starts. “Ideally in a situation where everybody makes 25 starts. That’s the ideal situation.”

For a two-way player returning to a full pitching role, that number represents durability as much as availability. It also reflects how both Ohtani and the organization are approaching the season, with an emphasis on sustained contribution rather than a limited ramp-up.

A meaningful step, not a final answer

There is still a difference between a strong Spring Training outing and sustained success over a full season.

But this performance provided a clear signal.

Ohtani showed he can work deep enough into an outing, maintain his stuff across multiple innings and execute with a full mix of pitches. Those are the indicators the Dodgers needed to see.

With questions surrounding parts of the rotation, his progression takes on added importance.

Tuesday’s start did not answer every question about how his season will unfold. It did something just as important.

It gave the Dodgers a reason to believe that when Ohtani takes the mound to open the season, he will be ready to handle it.
