Curt Cignetti and the Indiana Hoosiers dominated once again in the Peach Bowl against the Oregon Ducks, winning by a head-turning final score of 56-22.
All game long, it was clear that Indiana was the better team. In fact, there are some conversations starting up about where the Hoosiers rank all-time among the best college football teams in history.
Now, Indiana and Cignetti will prepare to take on Carson Beck, Mario Cristobal, and the Miami Hurricanes in the national championship game.
After watching the Hoosiers dismantle the Ducks on both sides of the football, Dave Portnoy couldn’t hold back his thoughts on the team. He took to social media and didn’t hold back at all when talking about Cignetti and the Indiana football program.
“What Curt Cignetti has done at Indiana is without a shadow of a doubt one of the most impressive things I’ve seen in the history of sports. Indiana was one of the worst football programs in the history of college football. I thought Cig was a clown during that initial presser when he said ‘google me’. I was like this guy is gonna get throttled by the big boys,” Portnoy wrote on X.
“Instead it only took him 2 years to turn Indiana into a dominant national power. Sure NIL helps but still this is insane. It seemed beyond impossible to ever do it but to do it this fast? I still can’t believe it. The Big 10 now goes through Ann Arbor and Bloomington. Who would have ever dreamed it?”
Curt Cignetti’s First Two Years with the Indiana Hoosiers Have Been Magical
When Cignetti arrived in Bloomington, the expectations for Hoosiers football were low. In his first two seasons, the growing legend has led Indiana to a 26-2 record.
Coming into this season, the Hoosiers had never played in a national championship game. They’re now doing exactly that.
Cignetti, who comes from the Nick Saban coaching tree, is starting to be viewed as arguably the best college football head coach in the nation. He also has Indiana looking like a team who will remain competitive for years to come.
He’s just two years into his tenure with the Hoosiers. Cignetti is just getting started.
The Future Looks Bright for Indiana
In the middle of this season, Indiana moved quickly to get a contract extension done with Cignetti.
Back on October 16, 2025, the Hoosiers announced the new deal with Cignetti. He will be the team’s head coach through 2033 and will be paid handsomely for his troubles.
Should the Hoosiers find a way to defeat the Hurricanes and win a national championship, this year’s team will be in the conversation for one of the best of all-time. Cignetti’s legacy will also take a huge leap as well.
Portnoy is taking notice, as is the rest of the nation. The sky is the limit for Indiana moving forward as long as Cignetti is leading the charge.
Cignetti and the Hoosiers will face off against Miami in the national championship on Monday, January 19, at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
