Crews halt progress on Geneva fire in Golden Gate Canyon, pre-evacuation warnings remain for Jefferson, Gilpin counties

Front Range officials sent out pre-evacuation warnings for people living in Golden Gate Canyon after a house fire spread to nearby grass and trees, Gilpin and Jefferson sheriff’s officials said Thursday morning.

The Geneva fire is less than an acre and is no longer spreading, the Jefferson County sheriff’s office said at 12:34 p.m.

Pre-evacuation warnings for the surrounding area are still in place, including a 3-mile radius of Drew Hill Road and Spirit Horse Trail.

Gilpin County officials at noon issued a pre-evacuation warning for Golden Gate Estates, Braecher Ranchettes, Smith Hill Road, Crawford Gulch Road, Colorado 46 east from Short Dirt Road and east of the 3000 block from Gap Road.

Evacuation orders were issued for the southern part of Golden Gate Canyon State Park and for the park’s visitor center, Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokesperson Kara Van Hoose said in an email to The Denver Post.

“The fire is under control and being mopped up,” Van Hoose said. “We expect those evacuations to be lifted shortly after.”
