Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Warned Against ‘Box Office’ Trade

If we’ve learned anything from the 1st 37 years Jerry Jones has owned the Dallas Cowboys, it’s that not only is the man unpredictable, but he also has a flair for the dramatic.

That’s why the upcoming 2026 NFL draft could be such a spectacular drama to watch unfold. It’s a year in which the Cowboys have 2 1st round picks for the 1st time since 2008, at No. 12 and No. 20 overall, and the feeling on the street is that anything could happen and everything is on the table.

That includes any trade you can imagine, and former Fox Sports host Skip Bayless proposed perhaps the wildest outcome during a recent appearance on The Arena: Gridiron podcast … and it’s not totally unbelievable.

In Bayless’ scenario, the Cowboys find a way to package either 1 or both of their 1st round picks with whatever else they need to throw in to move up to the No. 3 overall pick in order to select Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love.

No running back has been selected in the Top 3 since the Cleveland Browns selected Alabama running back Trent Richardson at No. 3 overall in 2012.

“This is what I fear he will do, because Jerry is all about box office,” Bayless said. “I fear that Jerry Jones, on draft night, will trade up with Arizona to the third overall pick, and he will take Jeremiyah Love, and Jerry would love being on the hot seat with the world after that pick. People would be saying ‘Jerry, you had the worst defense in the history of your franchise (in 2025), so how could you not take a defensive player?’ And he would sit back and say ‘I got the best offensive player in the draft and we are going to beat you with offense and we are going to fill the seats and win the ratings,’ because that would be a box office move, right?”

Jeremiyah Love Could Become Pro Bowler as Rookie

It’s not a stretch to say the impact Love could have as a rookie could instantly be on the same level as a player like Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs or Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley — 2 of the NFL’s very best at their position.

“Love is a dynamic and explosive running back who possesses the skill set to be a complete weapon in an NFL offense,” Bleacher Report’s Damian Parson wrote. “He combines home-run top-end speed with route-running and pass-catching ability to impact the offense in multiple ways.”

The Last Time Dallas Had 2 1st Round Picks …

The last time Dallas had multiple 1st-round picks, they took Arkansas running back Felix Jones at No. 22 overall and USF cornerback Mike Jenkins at No. 25 overall.

Unfortunately for Jones and the Cowboys, 2008 was 1 of the worst draft years in NFL history.

Jones never had a 1,000-yard rushing season and only even cracked 1,000 yards of offense once, in 2010, and was out of the NFL just 1 year after leaving the Cowboys following the 2012 season.

Jenkins was good but not great in 5 seasons with the Cowboys and made 1 Pro Bowl, in 2009, but only after Minnesota Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield was ruled out with an injury.
