Cowboys Linked to Trade for $30 Million Pro Bowler

It was not quite the rousing offseason spending spree that fans certainly had been hoping for, but still, the Dallas Cowboys have put forth much more free-agent money than they typically do this offseason, and they’ve brought back what could be three or even four potential starters for their defense, which struggled mightily last season and gave up a league-high 511 points.

And it is worth remembering that they might not be finished. The Cowboys still have at least one prominent defensive hole that is sure to get some attention either via the draft, by signing one of the handful of leftover veterans still on the market or by making a trade with a team looking to loosen up some payroll.

The Cowboys are most often linked to linebackers in that context, but NFL insider Albert Breer points out that the Colts have a player who might well fit another major Dallas need: slot corner Kenny Moore.

Kenny Moore Contract Running Up

Moore is entering the final year of his three-year, $30 million contract with the Colts, which would make him all the more interesting to the Cowboys. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported last week that Moore and the Colts had agreed to move on, and it is just a matter of time before a deal gets done.

Wrote Schefter: “Sources: Colts and Kenny Moore II mutually have agreed to seek a trade and a new home for the veteran cornerback. Moore is entering the last year of his contract, and both sides feel it is time to explore a trade.”

Cowboys Could Use Kenny Moore at Slot Corner

According to Albert Breer, the longtime NFL insider for Sports Illustrated, Moore would be a sensible addition to the Cowboys. He would fill the shoes left vacant by Jourdan Lewis, who went to Jacksonville last winter and left the Cowboys pretty much without a slot corner. The idea was to move DaRon Bland into that role, but he preferred the outside and his injury-plagued 2025 season was an issue either way.

Wrote Breer on Monday: “First of all, he’s still a good football player. … His position, too, has taken on greater importance across the NFL—guys who were once purely nickels, playing part-time, are now viewed as starters.

As for potential landing spots, I think Dallas would be one, with the nickel being an important piece in new coordinator Christian Parker’s defense and the Cowboys having a hole after Jourdan Lewis’s departure to the Jaguars last year.

Cowboys Piecing Together Slot Corner Options

Breer speculates that the cost for Moore would be only a Day 3 pick, since his contract is running up and the trading team might need to give him a new contract. The Cowboys could afford that, especially because they have three fifth-rounders, including two compensatory picks in that round, at No. 177 and No. 180.

Whether the Cowboys would be interested in paying Moore is another question, though.

As things stand, their slot options are limited. Two of the team’s new safeties, PJ Locke and Jalen Thompson, can play some slot corner and are expected to get snaps at the position. But they are not primary inside corners, and the Cowboys would probably prefer to keep Bland outside.  Reddy Steward and Corey Ballentine handled snaps there last season.

All this means that, while their need is not as great as their need for a linebacker, the Cowboys do need to fill the role–and Moore would do so.
