Cowboys’ Jerry Jones Facing Criticism Over Comments About George Pickens’ Agent

Arguably the No. 1 priority on the Dallas Cowboys’ to-do list is get star wide receiver George Pickens signed to a long-term contract extension.

Pickens earned a second-team All-Pro selection after a 93-catch, 1,429-yard, 9-touchdown breakout season in 2025 opposite CeeDee Lamb.

But one thing standing in his way of inking a multi-year extension is Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who has a reputation as a notoriously tough negotiator.

Fans Furious Over Jones-Pickens Negotiations

Jones was getting raked over the coals on Tuesday after comments he made about Pickens’ agent David Mulugheta went viral on social media.

“I asked Jerry Jones if George Pickens has said he wants negotiations to go thru agent David Mulugheta,” NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo wrote on X. “Jones said he’s talked to agents over the years and has no issue doing that. But… ‘If he worked without an agent, he’d save a lot of money.’ After a pause, he added: ‘With me.’”

Likely having PTSD from last year’s disastrous negotiations with Micah Parsons, Cowboys fans ripped into Jones over his negotiating strategy.

“LOL literally this is the same exact old geriatric Jerry wanted Micah to do last yr. Hes gonna try and bully George into a corner. Except George is the type to not giveeee a [expletive]! Jerry being Jerry will always kill the Cowboys,” one fan wrote.

“Manipulated a star player about dozen years ago & cost the star nearly 9 figures in career earnings. Afraid to deal with ‘real’ agents,” another fan replied.

“That’s because Jerry A [expletive] jackass that thinks he can talk to the players directly to make deals. This isn’t the 90s Jerry,” a third fan stated.

“Owners telling players to ditch their agent seems a bit suspicious,” one user said.

“Same old antics every offseason tries to outsmart the player & his agent. They both say FU to Jerry hold out & jerry ends up overpaying him a week before season starts,” another user scoffed.

“Jerry Jones going to do George Pickens like he did Micah Parsons and they both have the same agent Jerry Jones always have agenda,” remarked one fan.

“This is the same nonsense he tried to pull last year when he negotiated directly with Micah Parsons and bypassed his agent so he could get lock him into a bad deal. this old skin tag is inherently evil,” another fan posted.

“The NFL gotta do something about this [expletive],” exclaimed another user.

Dallas slapped Pickens with the franchise tag, locking him into a one-year fully guaranteed $27.3 million deal unless a long-term deal is reached before the July 15 deadline, which Jones admitted is a priority.

“[We have] contact with the agent but we haven’t been [in contact],” Jones stated.

“I don’t know [if we’ll get a deal done before July 15]. The franchise tag has an automatic timeframe on it, and all of us — and it’s my plan — will be working within that timeframe. It should play itself out. Make no mistake about it, we have long-term plans for Pickens.”

Pickens is primed to become one of the highest-paid wide receivers in the NFL. His next contract is likely to be in the $35 million to $40 million range. That would make him one of the four highest-paid WRs in the league.
