Cowboys Get Final Tally on Micah Parsons Trade Following NFL Draft

If the Dallas Cowboys manage to do what seems sort of impossible at this point — become Super Bowl contenders in 2026 — it could very well be because of a blockbuster trade that happened before the 2025 season.

That trade — sending Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers in exchange for a 2027 1st round pick, 2026 1st round pick, and Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark — finally revealed itself in totality following the 2026 NFL draft.

“The book on the Micah Parsons trade is officially closed,” Cowboys podcaster Dan Rogers wrote on his official X account. “Packers get: Micah Parsons. Cowboys get: Kenny Clark, Quinnen Williams, Malachi Lawrence, Devin Moore, LT Overton.”

Parsons was traded after several years of contentious contract negotiations with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and received a record-setting 4-year, $188 million contract extension from the Packers the day of the trade.

Blockbuster Trade Turned NFL Upside Down

When the Cowboys sent Parsons to the Packers, it immediately went down as one of the biggest blockbuster trades in NFL history.

“ESPN Sources: Cowboys are trading three-time All-Pro LB Micah Packers to the Green Bay Packers,” Schefter wrote on his official X account on August 28, 2025. “Parsons and the Packers already have reached agreement on a four-year, $188 million contract. David Mulugheta of Athletes First had a hand in the trade and ultimately negotiating the record-breaking contract that includes $120 million fully guaranteed at signing and makes Parsons the highest-paid non-QB in NFL history.”

Parsons, 27 years old, was the No. 12 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft and is 1 of just 2 players in NFL history to have at least 12.0 sacks in each of their 1st 5 NFL seasons, alongside Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive end Reggie White.

“Thank you Dallas ….. GO Pack Go!” Parsons wrote on his official X account following the trade.

Cowboys Ended Up With 2 Edge Rushers … For Now

The most obvious thing to point out about the Parsons draft haul is that they ended up with 2 edge rushers in Lawrence, a 1st round pick (No. 23 overall), and Overton in the 4th round (No. 137 overall).

The Cowboys weren’t done there. They also drafted Michigan edge rusher Raishawn Barham in the 3rd round (No. 91 overall).

While Lawrence has a clear-cut path to becoming a featured edge rusher for the Cowboys, Overton’s path might be a little different. At 6-foot-4 and 274 pounds, Overton could very well end up playing defensive tackle to provide much-needed depth behind Clark and Williams — and likely get the apprenticeship of a lifetime in 2026 with those 2 as his mentors.

“LT Overton is the most versatile defensive lineman in the 2026 NFL draft class,” Bleacher Report’s Matt Holder wrote before the draft. “He’s an impressive run defender with the potential to be an impactful pass-rusher at the next level. Overton received immediate playing time as a true freshman for the Aggies, totaling 31 tackles, three tackles for loss and one sack before seeing a dip in production with just 17 tackles and no TFLs or sacks in 2023. He became a starter with the Crimson Tide in 2024 and logged 42 tackles, three TFLs and two sacks. This past season, Overton racked up 42 tackles, six TFLs and four sacks.”
