A 4-year-old child is dead following a house fire in Mundelein overnight, according the Lake County coroner’s office.
An autopsy is scheduled for later today.
Fire officials said multiple people attempted to make entry into the home on the 200 block of Dalton Avenue, but were driven back because of heavy fire and smoke.
The stairwell to the basement had also burned away, hampering efforts to rescue the child, fire officials said.
