The Washington Commanders have been extremely proactive since the end of the 2025 season. Within the first month of the offseason, they fired both of their main coordinators and replaced them. Within the first week of the NFL Free Agency period, they have made 13 notable roster signings/resignings. General manager Adam Peters has been actively pursuing game-changing talent that boosts the level of competition on the team. Fox Sports NFL reporter Greg Auman predicts that the Commanders’ next roster addition could be a very familiar face.

Auman lists the Commanders as a fit for former Dallas Cowboys starting cornerback Trevon Diggs. “Diggs, 27, is a wild card on this list, two years removed from making $19 million a year, yet a player who was cut by the Cowboys and Packers at the end of this past season. He has an 11-interception season on his résumé, but went all of 2025 without so much as a pass defensed. He’s worth a shot for a team that doesn’t have to rely on him as an every-down corner.”
The Cowboys inked Diggs to a five-year, $97-million extension in July of 2023, but a contract now would only cost around $7.5 million, according to Spotrac. Corner play was an issue for Washington last season, and Diggs’ upside as a former First-Team All-Pro could prove to be well worth a low-risk contract.
The Washington Commanders Have Already Improved Their Secondary

Pro Football Focus graded the Commanders as the 3rd-worst coverage team and sixth-worst defense overall in 2025. While Diggs would be a nice addition, the Commanders have already added two notable names to their secondary. One of Adam Peters’ first big signings this offseason was for cornerback Amik Robertson on a two-year, $16 million deal.
Trey Amos and Mike Sainristil were the only two corners on the roster following the team’s release of Marshon Lattimore. “With Robertson, they add someone who can play inside or outside — much like Sainristil,” John Keim of ESPN wrote. “It provides Washington with more versatility for new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones, who has been known for his coverage disguises. Robertson has started 25 games in his five-year career, and though his best spot has been the slot, he can move around.”
The Commanders also signed former Indianapolis Colts safety Nick Cross to a two-year, $14 million deal. Cross becomes another versatile piece on the backend with two years of starting experience and is known for his aggressive play style. NFL draft analyst Lance Zierlein describes Cross as “a chase player who seeks to make a statement upon impact and has impressive stopping power near the line or as an open-field tackler.”
These two additions certainly help stabilize the defensive back group, but there’s a chance that the Commanders could address this unit in the draft as soon as the first round. Cornerback Mansoor Delane is NFL media analyst Daniel Jeremiah’s top-ranked corner and is likely to be available for the Commanders at seventh overall. Delane has been projected to the Commanders in various mock drafts as he’s viewed as a “sticky-corner” who would mesh well with Daronte Jones’ defensive scheme.
The Commanders’ Defense Already Looks Completely Different

New defensive coordinator Daronte Jones walked in expecting to turn around an underperforming and aging unit. However, nearly six weeks after he was brought in, the outlook looks significantly more promising. Beyond the additions of Robertson and Cross, the Commanders have also added defensive ends Odafe Oweh, K’Lavon Chaisson, and Charles Omenihu, defensive tackle Tim Settle, and linebacker Leo Chenal. These moves signal the Commanders’ commitment to improvement and competition for next year.
