Dan Quinn and the Washington Commanders officially tied up some loose ends from the signing of wide receiver Stefon Diggs this week.
According to the NFL transaction wire, the Commanders released injured guard Tyler Cooper to create roster space for Diggs.
The 6-foot-6 guard was a 2025 undrafted free agent who spent roughly a month with the Commanders last season. He finished the regular season with the Arizona Cardinals but returned to Washington on a futures contract in January.
Cooper, who is still battling for an opportunity to make his NFL regular season debut, spent the entire offseason and training camp with the Commanders until this week.

Cooper began his career with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent last spring. As a Saint Croix Falls, Wisconsin native, the guard described that as a dream-come true.
“I think it’s every kid’s dream to play at this level,” Cooper said, via SI on Packers’ Bill Huber. “But I think when it really becomes like the dream that you think you can attain, maybe in college you start to really think like that, but it’s one thing at a time.”
Cooper didn’t play much early in his college career at the University of Minnesota. But he never quit and finally became a regular contributor for the program his final two seasons from 2023-24.
“He was honorable-mention all-Big Ten on the field in 2024 and was all-academic Big Ten from 2020 through 2024,” wrote Huber. “He was selected for the East-West Shrine Bowl, with the game’s director of football operations, Eric Galko, saying Cooper could ‘play guard tomorrow’ in the NFL.”
The guard joined the Commanders in September 2025, spending about month with the team. Cooper also spent about a month with the Cardinals in December. He signed the futures deal with the Commanders on January 6.
Commanders Add WR Stefon Diggs to Roster

The Commanders signed Diggs to address the biggest hole on their roster. So, it made sense that Washington choose to cut a player from a different position group.
With the loss of Cooper, the Commanders still have eight players listed as guards on their roster. Those players are Nick Allegretti, Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu, Brandon Coleman, Sam Cosmi, Julian Good-Jones, Timothy McKay, Chris Paul and Tanoa Togiai.
In Diggs, the Commanders are getting a receiver who had four Pro Bowls and two All-Pro seasons in his career. During 2020, Diggs led the NFL with 127 catches and 1,535 receiving yards while with the Buffalo Bills.
The veteran wideout has bounced around to different teams the past few seasons. Last year, he led the AFC champion New England Patriots with 85 catches and 1,013 receiving yards. Diggs also registered four touchdowns.
Since 2018, Diggs has seven 1,000-yard campaigns. The only season where he didn’t reach that milestone was in 2024 when he played in just eight games because of injury.
He has 942 catches, 11,504 receiving yards and 74 touchdowns in 161 NFL games.
