The Washington Commanders had a clear goal of adding more firepower around young star quarterback Jayden Daniels heading into the 2026 NFL offseason.
In free agency, the team swung and missed on two big targets. They were in the running for both Romeo Doubs and Alec Pierce, but both players opted to sign elsewhere.
After missing on those two targets, the Commanders settled on signing both Van Jefferson and Dyami Brown. Clearly, those two players are not the big upgrade the team was hoping to find. That left the 2026 NFL Draft as a chance to improve the position.
With the No. 71 overall pick in the third round, Washington brought in a potential difference maker. Clemson standout Antonio Williams ended up being the pick.
Commanders Fans Will Love This New Antonio Williams Info
Many Commanders fans might not know much about Williams. He was not one of the most talked about wide receivers in the 2026 draft class.
That being said, NFL Draft expert Todd McShay of The Ringer has provided an outlook for Williams that will get fans excited.
“Williams projects as a WR3 slot receiver as a rookie, with Z flanker flexibility in the future,” McShay wrote.
“His game and athletic profile are similar to Ladd McConkey’s. Williams will thrive in a high-target slot role where there are YAC opportunities and chances for him to convert third downs.”
Being compared to McConkey is high praise. Over his first two years in the NFL, McConkey has caught 148 passes for 1,938 yards and 13 touchdowns in 32 games. He has become a rising star with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Taking a Look at Antonio Williams’ College Career
For those who are unaware of the success that Williams had at Clemson, let’s take a closer look.
Williams played four years with the Tigers. Most players who spend that kind of time with head coach Dabo Swinney come into the NFL ready to play.
During those four seasons, Williams racked up 207 catches for 2,320 yards and 21 touchdowns. His best season came in 2024 when he caught 75 passes for 904 yards and 11 scores.
At the end of the day, Williams looks the part of an instant impact playmaker for Daniels. He may not be a go-to target in year one, but he has big-time potential for the future.
Washington came into the offseason badly needing help at wide receiver. With Deebo Samuel leaving town, the need for a possession slot wide receiver with yards after the catch ability was obvious. Williams should be able to help fill that role in 2026.
