Colorado weather: Heavy snow forecast for Front Range foothills, mountains

A winter storm is set to bring heavy snow to the Front Range mountains and foothills starting Wednesday, though forecasters are still uncertain how much snow will fall in metro Denver.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch for the Front Range mountains and foothills starting Wednesday morning, with up to 2 feet of snow forecast to fall in the mountains of Summit County, Rocky Mountain National Park, Indian Peaks and the Mosquito Range, Medicine Bow Range and Front Range foothills.

Up to 3 feet of snow could fall in isolated areas and wind gusts of up to 35 mph are possible, according to the agency.

The storm’s track is still uncertain, NWS Boulder forecaster Caitlyn Mensch said Monday night.

“That uncertainty will have impacts on amounts, and that especially goes for adjacent areas like the western I-25 corridor,” Mensch said.

The storm is expected to last until Friday morning. Forecasters will have more certainty about snow totals for Denver and surrounding areas 12-36 hours before the storm, the agency posted on X.
