Updates
5A girls championship: No. 4 Northfield (24-3) vs. No. 2 Roosevelt (25-2)
10:35 a.m.: Northfield’s buckets are just too few and too far between. Kyla Hollier has been magnificent, burying a pair of 3-pointers and working the Nighthawks inside to the tune of 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Roosevelt leads 31-17 with 4:03 left in the second quarter. — Matt Schubert
10:31 a.m.: The Rough Riders full-court press is a problem. Two steals lead two back-to-back Kyla Hollier buckets, and now the Roosevelt lead has grown to 29-15 with 5:30 left in the second quarter. Northfield is in serious trouble. — Matt Schubert
10:22 a.m.: Roosevelt just smothered Northfield in the first quarter, dominating the boards (12-5) and forcing eight Nighthawks turnovers. The shooting hasn’t been great, but when three of your five baskets are 3s, that works. Rough Riders lead 19-9 going into the second quarter. — Matt Schubert
10:15 a.m.: Northfield has finally shown up. After starting 0 for 6 from the field with four turnovers, the Nighthawks have scored back-to-back buckets to make it 11-4 with 3:32 left in the first quarter. With a decided edge with the crowd, all the Nighthawks need is a spark. — Matt Schubert
10:08 a.m.: Roosevelt immediately takes charge of this game, scoring seven straight points, including two baskets from Kyla Hollier in the game’s first 30 seconds. Northfield is going to have to dig itself out of a hole for the second straight game. — Matt Schubert
9:59 a.m.: Championship Saturday hath arrived!
We’ll be here all day covering all six championship games between Class 4A, 5A and 6A, and we begin with one that should be a dandy: No. 2 Roosevelt (25-2) vs. No. 4 Northfield (24-3) in the 5A girls title game.
Roosevelt is going for its second straight 5A title, while Northfield is looking for its first in program history. The Nighthawks had to pull off an epic comeback just to get here. Do they have enough left in the tank to take down the defending champs? — Matt Schubert
