Snow and ice shut down several highways in Colorado’s mountains Thursday morning, including part of Interstate 70, according to state transportation officials.
As of 9:40 a.m., according to the Colorado Department of Transportation, road closures included:
- U.S. 6 in both directions between milemarker 222 near Grizzly Peak and Interstate 70 for safety concerns.
- U.S. 24 in both directions between Minturn, a town south of Vail, and Leadville for safety concerns, including several crashes.
- The right lane of westbound I-70 from Exit 205 for Silverthorne to Exit 203 for Frisco for a stalled vehicle that spun out.
Westbound I-70 was also closed from Exit 232 for Empire Junction to Exit 228 in Georgetown for safety concerns, but the highway reopened shortly before 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
Cameras along I-70 showed wet, snowy roads and backed-up traffic throughout Colorado’s mountains. Heavy traffic was reported on both directions of I-70 between Silverthorne and Golden, according to state transportation officials.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
