Clear Frontrunner Emerges for Vacant Broncos OC Position

The Denver Broncos’ search for a new offensive coordinator appears to be entering its final stage and one name is clearly separating from the pack.

As Yahoo Sports noted, the Broncos have officially interviewed in-house candidate Davis Webb for their vacant offensive coordinator position. 

This is a move that further cements him as the leading candidate to replace Joe Lombardi.

“Source said Broncos have officially interviewed pass game coordinator/quarterbacks coach Davis Webb for their offensive coordinator job,” Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette reported Sunday morning. 

“Sources have said Webb is the leading candidate for the job.” 

Webb’s interview comes after weeks of internal momentum and league-wide interest, with the 30-year-old assistant long viewed as the reason for Lombardi’s dismissal. 

As the process now nears a decision point, Denver’s preference appears increasingly clear. 

Davis Webb Has Always Been the Favorite

Before the Broncos ever officially moved on from former offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi, Davis Webb was already drawing significant interest around the league. 

The Raiders and Bills interviewed him for their head coaching position while the Eagles, Giants and Ravens all interviewed him for their OC position this month. 

This created real urgency inside Denver’s building to secure his future.

When Denver ultimately made the decision to part ways with Lombardi, Webb immediately emerged as the internal frontrunner. 

Promoting Webb would allow head coach Sean Payton to maintain continuity within the offensive staff while retaining one of the league’s fastest-rising young coaches. 

Webb currently serves as Denver’s offensive pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach and has been a huge part of Bo Nix’s success. 

League sources have consistently framed Webb’s promotion as the most logical path for Denver and potentially the only way to keep him in the building.  

Broncos Interview External Candidates, But Webb Pulls Ahead

While Webb is viewed as the favorite, Denver has conducted a thorough process.

The Broncos have also interviewed Brian Johnson, the Washington Commanders’ assistant head coach and passing game coordinator, as well as Ronald Curry of the Buffalo Bills. 

Both Johnson and Curry are respected offensive minds with experience in quarterback development and play design. 

Even if Webb ultimately lands the OC role, either candidate could still factor into Payton’s staff in another capacity, such as quarterbacks coach or senior offensive assistant. 

However, sources indicate Webb remains the top choice after the interview phase.  

His familiarity with Payton’s system, rapport with the quarterback room, and growing league reputation have given him a clear edge. 

With internal and external interviews now complete, the Broncos appear poised to make a decision soon. 

All signs point to Davis Webb being on the verge of his first offensive coordinator opportunity at just 30 years old.
