The collision happened around 3:40 p.m. on eastbound Interstate 80 west of Mace Boulevard.

The officers had just completed an enforcement stop on an unrelated vehicle when “an individual drove his vehicle at a high rate of speed along the right shoulder of the freeway and intentionally struck the patrol vehicle head-on,” CHP Assistant Commissioner Ezery Beauchamp said in a video statement posted to social media.

The officers, who were wearing their seatbelts, suffered minor to moderate injuries in the crash. They were treated at an area hospital.

The collision was caught on camera. The footage showed the SUV rolling over after hitting the patrol vehicle.

The driver of the SUV was taken into custody.

“Acts of violence like this against our officers will not be tolerated,” Beauchamp said. “Our CHP detectives and investigative personnel will work collaboratively with the district attorney’s office to ensure this individual is held accountable for his actions.”
