Chiefs Trade up From No. 9 Pick to Select CB Mansoor Delane

The Kansas City Chiefs traded their No. 9 selection to the Cleveland Browns, moving up to the sixth overall pick and taking LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane.

Kansas City traded the ninth pick, along with No. 74 and 148, to get to No. 6. Cornerback was one of its top roster needs after trading away Trent McDuffie and losing Jaylen Watson to free agency, both ending up with the Los Angeles Rams.

Delane has been widely regarded as the best cornerback in this year’s draft class. He excels in press-man coverage, which the Chiefs’ defense plays a lot of. Delane is smooth and fluid in coverage, and possesses 4.3 40-yard dash speed.

He has all the makings of a lockdown corner with Pro Bowl upside. Delane was a Unanimous All-American in 2025, and was also named First-Team All-SEC. He dealt with a core muscle injury for most of the 2025 season, but the fact that he played at such a high level despite that is an encouraging sign.

He was dominant in the ACC during his three-year tenure at Virginia Tech. Delane transferred to LSU for his senior season, and played just as well against top tier competition in the SEC. Throughout his four-year collegiate career, he recorded eight interceptions, 191 total tackles, 27 passes defensed, and four forced fumbles.

Delane should instantly become a starter opposite second-year cornerback Nohl Williams. Veteran Kendall Fuller and former 2022 first-round pick Kaiir Elam could be in the mix behind them. Kansas City signed free agent Kader Kohou to play in the slot. With those five, the Chiefs have nicely rebuilt its cornerback corps.

Previewing the Remainder of the Draft for Chiefs

Following the trade-up for Delane, here are the remaining picks for Kansas City:

  • No. 29, first round
  • No. 20, second round
  • No. 109, fourth round
  • No. 169, fifth round
  • No. 176, fifth round
  • No. 210, sixth round

The Chiefs can go a variety of different directions with their seven remaining picks. With cornerback now on the backburner, pass rusher, offensive tackle, and wide receiver move to the top of the list. General manager Brett Veach recently said he believes the offensive tackle position gets thin after the first round, putting that very much in play at No. 29.

Kansas City still badly needs a pass rusher to pair opposite George Karlftis. It passed on Rueben Bain Jr., who was often mocked to the Chiefs during the offseason. Veach stated that this year’s draft is deep with quality EDGE players, so he may be willing to wait until the middle rounds.

The Chiefs also passed on wide receiver Jordyn Tyson, who was starting to pick up steam to land in Kansas City over the past few weeks. Receiver is another deep position, so Veach may also wait in that department too. Some of the Chiefs’ lesser needs such as safety, linebacker, and tight end could be addressed at any time. Knowing Veach’s history, he may not be finished trading. He could also take another corner, although it likely wouldn’t be until the late rounds.
