Chiefs HC Andy Reid Reveals How He’s Taken Advantage of an Extended Offseason

Although they had a letdown 2025 season, the Kansas City Chiefs don’t project to stay down for long.

A lot of that can be attributed to the veteran leaders they have throughout the organization. Coaches Andy Reid, Steve Spagnuolo, and Eric Bieniemy, along with general manager Brett Veach, have been around the NFL for a long time and have had an incredible amount of success.

For the first time nearly a decade, the Chiefs didn’t make an extended postseason run, and missed the playoffs entirely for the first time since 2014. That gave them a rare opportunity to have time to reflect on things and get a head start on offseason tasks.

Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid Revealed He Has Most of the Offensive Game Plan Set for 2026 Season

Reid spoke to the media on Monday, mostly to discuss his view on the 2026 NFL Draft, which kicks off on Thursday night. He revealed that regardless of whether the Chiefs add more talent on offense during the draft, the offensive game plan is pretty much set based on the players they already have in place.

“We have a pretty good idea of the guys that are here, and then any new addition we can always add to or take out,” Reid said. “But, we have a pretty good idea who the main guys are that are here.”

Reid went on to say that the extended offseason gave him time he usually doesn’t have this early on in the process to focus in on the offense.

“We’ve had this extended offseason, and we’ve been able to dive in there and really work with the plan for this coming season,” Reid continued. “We think we’ve got good direction in which we’re going. We’ll see how it all formulates by the time we get out of these OTAs and into camp, then out of camp and into the season.”

At this stage of his career, Reid isn’t going to make dramatic changes to his offensive system. However, he that doesn’t mean he won’t switch some things up. Even Veach said during his pre-draft press conference last week that he expects Kansas City’s offense to lean more into a power rushing attack in 2026.

“We do have some talent on the offensive line,” Veach said. “Everyone knows the potential and flashes that Josh (left tackle Josh Simmons) has shown. On the interior with Kingsley (left guard Kingsley Suamataia), Trey (right guard Trey Smith), and Creed (center Creed Humphrey), I think it would be a smart play to take advantage of that interior trio, to be more violent and utilize those guys and their strengths. When you add a guy like Ken Walker, that’s why he was so attractive to us. He has explosive speed, and he can do damage in the pass game.”

With the significant chunk of money they’re paying Walker, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes returning from a torn ACL and LCL, it’s safe to assume they will be more committed to the run moving forward. Asking Mahomes to do it all as he enters the second half of his career is flirting with disaster. When Mahomes gets back to his old self, the Chiefs could have one of the most balanced and dangerous offenses in the league.
