The Boston Celtics have been having some fun lately, teasing fans about Jayson Tatum’s potential return. However, the star player’s staying mum on this subject, not willing to give anything away.
“I do not have a date,” Tatum told reporters on Saturday (per WEEI’s Justin Turpin). “I just take it one day at a time. I feel better than I did yesterday. That’s what is most important.”
Increased speculation began after the Celtics posted three photos of Tatum participating in drills. However, he quickly clarified what those photos were about.
“Work out, see how you recover the next day, and then you just make a plan from there,” Tatum said. “It was a little five-on-five (on Wednesday). It’s tough to go into detail on every single thing I’m doing every day, but I will say I’m just getting acclimated more and doing little things with some of the guys out there, but it’s all part of rehab and just going with the plan.”
Tatum is recovering from his ruptured Achilles tendon that he sustained in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, and fans want him to return as soon as possible. However, the Celtics have put together an impressive season thus far with Jaylen Brown leading the way, as Boston holds a 36-19 record and are in second place in the Eastern Conference.
Jayson Tatum Refers To Discussions Of His Return As ‘Beating A Dead Horse’
Tatum didn’t hold back when talking about all the discussions regarding his potential return this season.
“I feel like I’m beating a dead horse,” Tatum said. “I’m taking it one day at a time. This is something that’s very serious. The injury that I had is just a long journey. For me, it’s just easier to take it one day at a time and see how I progress from there.”
He went on to say that he “know what 100 percent feels like,” so when he is at the stage, he’ll “be ready.”
“I think it’s just important that I worked this hard to just kind of get myself in a position where it could be a conversation,” he said. “I think we’ve done a really good job of that thus far.”
Joe Mazzulla Speaks On Jayson Tatum’s Recovery
Along with Tatum’s comments, head coach Joe Mazzulla added a few thoughts of his own.
“It just kind of depends on how he continues to hit those checkmarks, whatever they may be,” Mazzulla said. “At the end of the day, we have to make sure the main goal has always been get to 100%, get to as healthy as you possibly can and go from there. He’s done a great job working. My hope is that he gets as healthy as he can.”
