The Carolina Panthers decided to attack the free agent market to fill holes. With the ultimate goal being a return trip to the postseason, the team spent. Safety Nick Scott spoke to The Athletic’s Joseph Person regarding the moves.
“As those signings were happening, I was still a free agent and playing a little hard to get. But once I saw those guys rolling it, I was talking to my agent like, ‘Hold on, man. Maybe let’s go ahead and reach back out to the Panthers. It looks like it could be a fun season, a good defense.’”
While watching the transactions, Scott, a free agent himself, saw the metaphorical writing on the wall and pushed to re-sign. Scott enjoyed his best NFL season with 111 tackles, starting all 17 games. According to Spotrac, Scott signed a one-year, $2 million contract to return.

Coker Expects A Breakthrough
Wideout Jacob Coker enjoyed a concurrent breakthrough with the team. During the playoff loss to the Los Angeles Rams, the second-year wideout caught nine catches for 134 yards and a touchdown. He spoke about the new vibe around the team.
“What an opportunity for us to surround us with guys that can play. The more the merrier,” Coker said Monday before teeing off. “We’re gonna be a force to reckon with this year, and I think other teams feel that and the sky’s the limit for us.”
Coker provided the Panthers with a better option than Xavier Legette, who continues to struggle. With Tetairoa McMillan lining up as the No. 1 receiver, Coker’s ability to muscle cornerbacks and use his body as a shield provides Bryce Young with an option.
Thinking about when Jalen Coker had 9 catches for 134 yards and a TD in the wildcard game… Is it too early to be nostalgic? 😮💨😮💨pic.twitter.com/q8Mb4TBEQ5

Morgan’s Big Risk to Help Pass Rush
Jaelan Phillips signed a three-year, $41.9 million contract. The risk enters with his injury history. Over his five-year career, Phillips has only played double-digit games. Carolina invested in a player who recorded more than 7.5 sacks in a season. Phillips’ main job remains to get downhill, barreling toward the quarterback.

The Element of Surprise Vanished
Between Phillips and Devin Lloyd, Carolina made the investment. However, they will not be able to sneak up on anyone. In fact, the rest of the NFC will know who the team is. As a result, Carolina needs better play. As mentioned, players like Legette need to produce on offense.
What becomes stunning is the inability to generate separation despite possessing above-average speed. The defense is only as good as the lead the offense grants them. Under those circumstances, bringing in John Metchie as a possible replacement could help to motivate the former Panthers draft pick.
1) Eagles All22 quick thread vs. Jets. 1) It was good to see John Metchie III out there. He looked like I expected! You can see the quickness and fluidity on show immediately. He does a good job closing the gap between himself and the corner before sharply breaking back. Good… pic.twitter.com/6ixY8NxR3d

Free Agents Who Bring Freedom
Lloyd gives defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero the freedom to expand the defense. For example, with his speed, the Panthers can deploy the linebacker on blitzes from the edge and the A and B gaps. Those blitzes disrupt passing rhythm and will force receivers to break off routes and work back to the quarterback.

The Panthers spent money to bolster the roster. With an ample quiver of draft picks, the team’s expectations rose. Can Carolina make even more headway?
