C.J. Stroud Gets Cold Truth About Future With Texans

If C.J. Stroud wants to follow through on his long-term plans with the Houston Texans, the 2026 season figures to be pivotal.

Stroud had a historic rookie season, earning Pro Bowl honors and winning the Offensive Rookie of the Year award. Since then, his production has slipped amid issues along the offensive line and at running back.

Stroud’s play was an issue this past postseason, adding to the gravity of the upcoming year.

C.J. Stroud Gets Reality Check About Texans Future

GettyC.J. Stroud is still the subject of speculation amid uncertainty about his contract.

Stroud has led the Texans to the postseason in each of the past three seasons, and he had not been framed as the cause for their demises until this past playoff run.

Stroud and the Texans have fallen in the Divisional Round in each of their postseason berths.

“The Texans have been wholly supportive of Stroud, who is eyeing a big fourth season,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler wrote on May 14. “But the team has decided to pay others first, including defensive stalwarts Will Anderson Jr. and Azeez Al-Shaair.

“Whereas the Panthers appear content with Bryce Young, Stroud’s 2023 draft mate who is playing out the fourth year of his rookie contract without a new deal, Houston’s messaging hasn’t been as clear. The Texans have not tipped their hand, but some around the league are loosely expecting Stroud to also play out the fourth year of his rookie pact without an extension.”

The Texans picked up the fifth-year option of Stroud’s rookie contract, keeping the former No. 2 overall pick of the 2023 draft under contract through the 2027 season.

It remains a mystery what the future holds for Stroud or the Texans beyond that.

C.J. Stroud Facing Significant Questions in League Circles

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer echoed Fowler’s read on Stroud’s situation with the Texans, and that this coming season looms large for the polarizing QB. He also cited examples of big-money contracts for QBs working against the teams that gave them out.

“I do think there is a question of whether or not C.J. Stroud is the quarterback that you want to hitch your future to for the next 10 years. The reality is, though, when you sign these contracts, it doesn’t always turn out that way. It’s an affirmation that the team thinks you’re going to get there, but it doesn’t always work out like that,” Breer said in a video on May 13.

“So, is C.J. Stroud a piece of that nucleus? And my sense is you’d probably want to see another year before you make that determination.”

Breer noted the fifth-year option buys time and agreed with their leaving it at that for now.

“C.J.’s got a ton of ability, and there’s no question about his natural physical talent. He’s also got a great head for the game. So the question is, can he bring all of that together?” Breer said of the Texans’ QB.

“This is going to be an important year. I do think he winds up being the quarterback that the Houston Texans hitch their wagon to. But make no mistake about it: if they can’t find some sort of compromise over the next couple of months, there’s a lot on the line for C.J. Stroud in 2026. No question about it.”
