The Philadelphia Phillies are entering the 2026 campaign facing quite a bit of pressure. Despite loading up in recent seasons in an effort to make a championship run, the Phillies have just one World Series appearance to show for. When it comes to individual players facing pressure, first baseman Bryce Harper might find himself at the top of the list.
While Harper enjoyed another strong season in 2025 (.267 BA, 27 HR, 75 RBI, 12 SB, .844 OPS), he recently found himself facing criticism from his own general manager, Dave Dombrowski. The comments Dombrowski made about Harper were certainly surprising, and he recently fired back at Philadelphia’s GM after previously breaking the silence on the situation.
Bryce Harper Addresses Dave Dombrowski Comments
Ever since bursting onto the scene as a 19-year-old phenom back in 2012 with the Washington Nationals, Harper has been one of the top players in the majors. He would win the National League Rookie of the Year Award that year, and since then, he’s earned eight All-Star selections, four Silver Slugger Awards, and a pair of MVP Awards, too.
As noted above, Harper produced at a high level in 2025, even if he did not manage to hit the heights he’s hit earlier in his career. In the eyes of Dombrowski, though, it wasn’t enough, as he turned heads by saying Harper was not “elite” last season. Anytime your general manager says something like that about one of your best players, it’s going to catch fans’ attention.
Harper immediately said that Dombrowski’s comments were “wild,” but he’s done his best to move on from the situation and focus on getting ready for the 2026 season. Still, these comments are going to hover around him throughout the spring, and he recently took a second to fire back at Dombrowski’s criticism of him once again.
“What’s someone’s opinion?” Harper said, per Matt Gelb of The Athletic. “Is it going to change the course of my career or my life? No. Philly media’s going to have an opinion. New York media’s going to have an opinion. Boston media is going to have an opinion. L.A. media’s going to have an opinion. D.C. media is going to have an opinion. Everybody’s going to have an opinion on who I am, or how I am, or anything.”
Do the Phillies Have a Bryce Harper Problem?

Considering how Harper signed a 13-year, $330 million contract with the Phillies back in 2019, his future with the team has rarely been up for debate. This season, though, that has changed. If Harper struggles out of the gate this season, could Dombrowski consider trading him in an effort to get out of the remainder of his massive deal before it’s too late?
While he may not be an MVP candidate anymore, Harper is still one of the best hitters in the league, which is something that Dombrowski appears to be overlooking. Known for his aggressive decision-making, though, Dombrowski’s comments indicate he isn’t content with maintaining the status quo if Philadelphia isn’t winning titles. So while Harper will look to move on from this incident, Dombrowski’s comments will likely linger over him as the regular season draws near.
