The Cleveland Browns have reportedly traded star pass rusher Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams in a blockbuster deal.
Cleveland traded Garrett to the Rams for Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round pick and other draft compensation, according to Adam Schefter. Following the reported deal, Browns general manager Andrew Berry spoke to reporters at the Browns Foundation Golf Tournament at Firestone and said it’s not a done deal.
“We wanted today to be about the Browns foundation and the good work we are doing there. Not naive that there is a lot in the social media sphere regarding Myles,” Berry said to reporters. “Nothing is final at this point; we are in discussions of a potential transaction, including him. I will have a lot more to say once it is final, if it does become final.
“I will discuss the details at that point. We are in negotiations, and we are hopeful we close something in the next several hours. But nothing is final yet. I will have an update for you guys, maybe as soon as tomorrow, once there is a resolution.”
It’s a rather non-comment from Berry, as he can’t say much until the deal is made official. But the Browns general manager did confirm he hopes to have it finalized in the coming hours, as the full trade isn’t known.
The Browns selected Garrett first overall in the 2017 NFL Draft.
Browns HC Wasn’t Assured Garrett Would be on Roster
Garrett skipped OTAs, which brought the trade rumors back in play.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Monken said he wasn’t assured that Garrett would be on the team when he was interviewing.
“No, I wasn’t assured that when I took the job,” Monken said. “I was never assured of anything when I took the job, other than once I signed my contract, whatever my contract said — that’s what I was assured. No matter what, any of us coaches sign up for is we show up every day and we coach the guys in the building like we’ve done since we’ve been here. That hasn’t changed.
“He’s not [unlike] any other player. I’m never told who’s going to be on the team, who’s not going to be on the team,” Monken added. “If that’s a question, I mean, every day we evaluate the roster. Andrew [Berry] evaluates the roster, management evaluates the roster. And, like I said, he’s no different than any other player we’ve got. So, I don’t know how to respond to that, because it’s really no different today than it’s been for the last however many months I’ve been the head coach.”
Garrett is a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, as he won the award last season after breaking the sack record.
Jared Verse Stats
Although the Browns traded away Garrett, Verse will help replace the void.
Los Angeles selected Verse 19th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, and he’s been an impact pass rusher. Verse has been named to the Pro Bowl in both of his first two NFL seasons.
Last season with the Rams, he recorded 7.5 sacks and 3 forced fumbles and was an impact pass rusher.
Verse has two years left on his rookie deal, with an option for a fifth year.
