Brooks Koepka Steals Scottie Scheffler’s Secret Weapon

When Scottie Scheffler made his famous switch from a blade putter to a TaylorMade Spider Tour X in March 2024, it kick-started the most dominant stretch of golf we’ve seen since prime Tiger Woods. Now, Brooks Koepka wants to see what the Spider life is all about.

According to Golf Channel’s Eamon Lynch, Koepka has switched out his Scotty Cameron Teryllium Newport 2 blade for a TaylorMade Spider. The 35-year-old will debut his new flat stick at this week’s WM Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale, a tournament he’s already won twice in his career.

Koepka left LIV Golf to rejoin the PGA Tour for the 2026 season, and his biggest weakness jumped off the page right away. The American lost a whopping 7.23 strokes from putting in three measured rounds at the Farmers Insurance Open, which ranked dead last in the field. Despite hitting the ball well and ranking third in the field in strokes gained from around the green, Koepka finished in a tie for 56th because he couldn’t make a putt all week.

Koepka is genuinely committed to improving his game and getting back in the mix as a top player in the world, so he’s not wasting time trying to fix his putting woes—even if that means ditching a putter that helped him win five major championships.

“I’ve been putting pretty poorly for the good side of two years,” Koepka said on Wednesday, per Christopher Powers of Golf Digest. “I don’t know what’s going on, but I’ve got to figure it out.”

The TaylorMade Spider helped Scheffler become a more consistent putter, and Koepka is hoping the same will happen to him.

Before Scheffler switched to his TaylorMade Spider, his putter was the only club holding him back from domination. In the four years leading up to 2024, the Texan ranked 117th, 107th, 58th and 162nd on the PGA Tour in strokes gained from putting. In 2024, he led the PGA Tour in putting average and ranked 21st in putts per round. In 2025, he had the best putting season of his career.

Since switching to a mallet putter, Scheffler has played in 38 tournaments and won 16.

“This Spider putter is really easy for me to line up,” Scheffler said in 2024, per PGA Tour. “I don’t have to use the line on the ball. I line the putter up really well, and I line up in the middle of the face, and pretty much as simple as that. Kind of gives me just a really good visual.”

Koepka said he was struggling with his alignment on the greens. The five-time major champion was looking for a putter that could keep the face and path consistent through impact, which is exactly what Scheffler found with his TaylorMade Spider.

Koepka has always been a great driver and iron player, but, like Scheffler, the putter has held him back from even more wins. If the switch yields similar results to Scheffler’s, the World No. 1 might finally have some stiff competition on the PGA Tour.
