Broncos Trade Pitch Reunites Sean Payton With Alvin Kamara

Speculation about the Denver Broncos acquiring Alvin Kamara in a trade with the New Orleans Saints has taken a significant downturn in recent weeks. However, not everyone is convinced that it should be completely off the table for either side.

Kamara has spoken openly about what he wants for his future, and the Saints have seemingly made their stance clear as well.

The Broncos, though, have left the door open for an addition at RB, and Kamara has team ties.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton was in the same role with the Saints when New Orleans drafted Kamara with the 67th overall pick in the 2017 draft. After three seasons apart, Fox Sports’ Ralph Vacchiano believes the time is right for a reunion.

Vacciano suggested a trade package that would send draft capital to the Saints and Kamara to the Broncos.

That is even with J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey on hand in Denver.

Saints get:

“Kamara is 31, coming off the worst season of his career, and coming back from knee and ankle injuries. He also doesn’t want to leave New Orleans. But a reunion with Sean Payton and a chance to chase another championship in what could be his final NFL season might be enough to convince him to change his mind,” Vacchiano wrote on April 10.

“Kamara could give the offense an added passing threat, and he could thrive in a reduced role. Given his age and injuries, he also wouldn’t cost Denver more than a sixth- or seventh-round pick.”

Kamara, who turns 31 in July, posted career lows with 471 yards and 1 touchdown while his 131 carries were the second-fewest of his career, and he played in 11 games, also a career low.

The final year of his two-year, $24.5 million contract is just one hurdle the Broncos could face.

Coaches’ Comments Speak Volumes

Payton has acknowledged that the Broncos will explore improving their running back room, despite their faith in Harvey, though that was specifically in regards to the draft.

“That could be a position that gets addressed if the opportunity presents itself,” Payton told reporters in March. “Look, we love the way RJ played. And we ran it more consistently earlier in the year than we did later in the year. I don’t like how we rushed it in the postseason. It’s one way to take pressure off your quarterback, and I think that’ll be a focus.”

It is unclear if the Broncos would surrender draft capital, even later-round picks, for Kamara, whose availability could be a moot point. Saints head coach Kellen Moore has expressed his position on the situation, saying they can find roles and work for all of their backs.

The Saints currently have seven backs under contract for 2026, including Kamara.

That tally also includes former Broncos draft pick Audric Estime, but, more importantly, free-agent signing Travis Etienne, whom the Broncos targeted.

Moore acknowledged that Etienne and Kamara have similar skill sets in his argument, and each point that he made could also be used to argue for the Saints trading the five-time Pro Bowler this offseason.

“‘Well, yeah. He’s certainly on the roster and part of that running back room,” Moore told reporters in March when asked if he expects Kamara to be on the team in 2026. “And we feel like there’s ways that you can manipulate all those guys and put them in plenty of situations. Again, look at our season last year. Look at probably just about every NFL season. Plenty of running backs play.”

It could take more than late-round picks for the Broncos to convince the Saints to trade Kamara.
