Broncos’ Sean Payton Faces Major Backlash Over Blunt Exchange With Reporter

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is facing criticism after a tense exchange with a reporter during a media availability this week.

This interaction occurred on Tuesday ahead of Denver’s Divisional Round matchup against the Buffalo Bills.

As Awful Announcing noted,While speaking with reporters, Payton was asked about linebacker Dre Greenlaw’s return from injury and his ability to “attack downhill” in the run game.

The question came from Denver Post beat writer Luca Evans, and Payton’s response immediately caused backlash.

“You want him to attack downhill?” Payton said.

“Like, what do you know about attacking downhill in the run game? You don’t know.”

When Evans acknowledged he was not a middle linebacker, Payton responded with a pointed “That’s right,” before briefly adding that it was good to have Greenlaw healthy again.

The exchange quickly spread across social media, with many viewers interpreting Payton’s tone as condescending toward a routine football question.

Fans Rip Payton for Tone and Treatment of Reporter

The clip sparked a wave of backlash online, with fans and media personalities criticizing Payton for what they viewed as an unnecessary put-down.

Veteran NFL analyst Brett Kollmann simply replied, “Come on man.”

Longtime Broncos radio voice Bob Fescoe questioned the lack of broader outrage:

“Where is the outcry for the way Payton treated this reporter?” Fescoe wrote. “He was downright rude and nasty.”

Other reactions were even harsher.

One fan called Payton “so smug and unlikeable,” while another labeled him “a dislikable human.”

Many believed coach Payton could have easily answered the question without belittling the person asking it.

A separate post from another fan went as far as to ask whether Payton is “the most hateable coach in the NFL.”

The criticism reflects how fans feel Payton’s abrasive media style often overshadows legitimate football discussions.

As much as fans don’t like his brash style with the media, Payton has driven major results on the field.

Reporter Downplays Incident as Broncos Shift Focus to Bills

Despite the online reaction, Evans quickly attempted to cool the situation.

The Denver Post reporter said the exchange wasn’t nearly as hostile as it appeared on video.

“This was a funny moment,” Evans wrote on social media. “We joked about it after. It’s all good.”

That clarification hasn’t fully stopped the debate, but it has helped reframe the moment as less of a feud and more of an awkward exchange amplified by timing and tone.

For Payton and the Broncos, the focus now shifts firmly back to football.

Denver enters the Divisional Round as the AFC’s No. 1 seed, preparing to host the Bills in a matchup against the reigning MVP.

Greenlaw’s availability could be a major factor in slowing Buffalo’s dangerous rushing attack.

With kickoff approaching on Saturday, both Payton and the Broncos appear ready to put the noise aside and advance to the AFC Championship game.
