Broncos Get Bad News on Dream Free Agency WR Target

Denver Broncos free agency wide receiver George Pickens news delivered a blow to offseason hopes, as the Dallas Cowboys are expected to remove the star receiver from the market before Denver ever gets a chance.

As Sports Illustrated noted, the Cowboys plan to place the franchise tag on Pickens, effectively ending any realistic free agency pursuit.

“The Dallas Cowboys are expected to place their franchise tag on Pro Bowl wide receiver George Pickens, league sources told ESPN,” Adam Schefter reported from Super Bowl week.

“The projected cost of the one-year, fully guaranteed franchise tag for Pickens will be roughly $28 million.”

Broncos fans dreaming of a splashy wide receiver addition in 2026 will need to pivot to another big name.

Pickens had been viewed as one of the few true WR1 options who might reach the open market.

Coming off a career year, Pickens posted 93 receptions for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns, establishing himself as one of the best WRs in the NFL.

For the Broncos, the update confirms what many around the league quietly expected but hoped would not happen.

Broncos Must Pivot After Pickens News

While Pickens was always a long shot, his availability would have offered Denver a rare chance to add a proven, ball-dominant receiver without sacrificing draft capital.

With that door now closed, the Broncos are left staring at a thin free-agent receiver class that lacks clear top-tier talent.

That list includes Jauan Jennings, Alec Pierce, Wan’Dale Robinson, Rashid Shaheed, Deebo Samuel and Mike Evans.

That group represents a clear step down from Pickens in terms of talent, impact and upside.

The inconsistency at the WR position has been very noticeable during the first two seasons of the Bo Nix era.

Courtland Sutton remains a productive option after earning his second Pro Bowl nod.

However, Denver still lacks a true weekly matchup nightmare who can tilt coverage and dictate defensive game plans.

Pickens fit that role, which is why the news feels like an early offseason setback.

Trade Market Looms Large for Denver

With free agency offering limited upside, attention now shifts toward the trade market.

Multiple reports have connected Denver to big-name receivers who could become available under the right circumstances.

Philadelphia’s A.J. Brown and Miami’s Jaylen Waddle have both been mentioned in league circles.

However, either move would require significant draft capital and careful salary cap maneuvering.

Denver previously explored a trade for Waddle before last November’s deadline, but Miami’s asking price proved too steep.

Marvin Harrison Jr. is another name that has been mentioned in Broncos circles.

But at just 23 years old, the former first round pick will require a major haul to acquire.

Still, the Broncos may have little choice but to revisit their approach.

Impact wide receivers rarely reach free agency, and Pickens’ franchise tag underscores that reality.

Given how costly drops have been, the Broncos may need to push their chips in and trade for a true No. 1 receiver to take that next step.
