Brazilian UFC Legends Meet in Ring for Upcoming Boxing Match

An upcoming boxing match this summer will take place between Brazilian UFC legends Shogun Rua and Glover Teixeira.

Sherdog.com first reported the news that Shogun will fight Teixeira at Spaten Fight Night 3 on August 29 in São Paulo, Brazil. This boxing match will be contested for eight two-minute rounds.

History of Spaten Fight Night

This is the third Spaten Fight Night event, with all three cards featuring Brazilian UFC legends in their main events. At the first Spaten Fight Night event, former longtime UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva battled Chael Sonnen, while in the second Spaten Fight Night event, it was Wanderlei Silva taking on Acelino Popo Freitas. Both of the fights were well-received, as the Silva vs. Sonnen bout was more or less a sparring match between friends, while the Silva vs. Popo event featured a post-fight brawl that saw the MMA legend get brutally knocked out.

The promoters are hoping that Shogun and Teixeira will not bring any funny business to the table, and given that they are two of the most well-liked and well-respected MMA fighters of all time, the promotion should get what they want here: just a good, clean boxing match between two former MMA fighters who are now in their 40s.

Shogun Rua and Glover Teixeira Are UFC Legends

Both Shogun and Teixeira are UFC legends. In fact, they were once tabbed to fight each other inside the Octagon in 2012, but the bout never happened, as Shogun allegedly told UFC president Dana White at the time that he preferred to be cut than face his fellow countrymen. Now, 14 years later, the two veterans will meet inside the boxing ring at Spaten Fight Night.

At age 44, Shogun has seen his better days. He has not competed since UFC 283 in January 2023, when he was knocked out by Ihor Potieira. That was Shogun’s third loss in a row, and after losing to a fighter who didn’t have a name, he decided to hang up his MMA gloves for good. In 2024, Shogun was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame, a worthy honor for the former UFC light heavyweight champion and PRIDE star.

There were rumblings that Shogun would come out of retirement to compete in the GFL in 2025, but after the promotion collapsed, he didn’t end up fighting for GFL. A year later, Shogun returns to combat sports when he battles Teixeira in boxing.

Speaking of Teixeira, the 46-year-old Brazilian is also a former UFC light heavyweight champion, though in recent years he has become more well-known for being the coach and training partner of UFC superstar Alex Pereira. Teixeira has not fought since UFC 283, when he lost a decision to Jamahal Hill, the same event that Shogun last competed on. Still, he has been staying busy in the gym training with Pereira, so he should be in great shape for this bout.
