For whatever reason, it seems as if Fernando Tatis Jr. is starting to gain some buzz in trade speculation talks. With the Atlanta Braves needing another outfielder for depth purposes, exploring a trade for Tatis Jr. would have massive implications across MLB.
In a recent post by SI.com’s Mark Morales-Smith, Fernando Tatis Jr. is the centerpiece of a massive mock trade that would send the three-time All-Star outfielder to Atlanta and join Ronald Acuña Jr. in a star-studded lineup.

What Are the Chances of a Trade of This Magnitude Happening?

There have been no reports that Fernando Tatis Jr. will be traded, or even that the San Diego Padres are listening to any trade conversations about their star outfielder who is locked into a 14-year, $340 million contract.
However, according to Spotrac, Tatis Jr. is listed as the top trade candidate (along with Tarik Skubal) in MLB. And it’s worth at least mentioning the massive package that Morales-Smith proposes in this hypothetical trade:
Atlanta Braves Receive
OF – Fernando Tatis Jr
San Diego Padres Receive
OF – Mike Yastrzemski
Prospect – RHP – Didier Fuentes
Prospect – RHP – Owen Murphy
Prospect – OF – Diego Tornes
The Atlanta Braves just signed Mike Yastrzemski this offseason, and Didier Fuentes will be on the Braves’ Opening Day roster this Friday. It would take at least four players to pull off a deal for Tatis Jr., so this package makes sense on that front. And for San Diego, they desperately need to replenish its farm system.

Why This Deal Makes Sense for the Braves?
There’s one big reason that this deal makes sense for the Braves, and it’s to keep pace with the other NL contenders in terms of star power. Atlanta has a really solid top-to-bottom roster, but will they be able to compete in the NL against teams like the Dodgers, Mets, and Phillies, who have several $300+ million players?
Tatis hit .268 last season with 25 home runs, 27 doubles, and an OPS+ of 125. He’s been a well-above league-average hitter for several years now, and has flourished in a new defensive role in the outfield.
If Yastrzemski gets offloaded in this trade idea, Tatis Jr. could slot in at left field, giving the Braves one of the best outfield pairs in the sport.
