The Atlanta Braves are considered to be one of the top contenders in MLB, with a strong need for another starting pitcher. After injuries to Hurston Waldrep and Spencer Schwellenbach, Atlanta may be searching for external options to help boost their staff. With all of the top free agent starters finding new teams, the Braves could also consider trading for an arm before the regular season opens up.
While the rumor mill seemingly dies down around this time of year, one name the Braves might consider is Luis Severino of the Athletics. There was some chatter earlier in the offseason that the Athletics might be open to moving him and his two-year, $45 million contract.

Will the Braves Add Another Starter?
The Braves, unlike some other MLB teams, do have a long list of potential internal options, but if names like Grant Holmes, Reynaldo Lopez, or Spencer Strider go down with injury, Atlanta will be left in a troubling spot.
In a recent piece by Bleacher Report, writer Zachary D. Rymer proposes one trade every MLB team should make, and Luis Severino is the name for the Athletics:
“Yet the Severino signing wasn’t necessarily made for purely competitive reasons, and he was vocal about having a bad time in Sacramento amid a rough 2025 season. He belongs elsewhere, and trading him could be a means for the A’s to offload $25 million and get something back in return.”

While a trade may be seen as unlikely at the moment, Atlanta could certainly use a proven arm like Luis Severino to slip in as its No.2 or 3 starter.
The Braves could offer the Athletics a pair of pitching prospects in a potential deal, or offload one of their young infielders, like Nacho Alvarez Jr.

Luis Severino’s Production as a Starter
Luis Severino is a two-time All-Star from way-back-when with the New York Yankees, but at age 32, he appears to still have a lot left in the tank.
In 2025, Severino had pretty eye-popping road/home splits, but it was due to pitching in Sutter Health Park, which is a minor league stadium. So, Severino was much more comfortable pitching on the road, and his numbers reflected that.
On the road, his ERA neared 3.00 over about 80 innings. His ERA over 80 innings at home? North of 6.00, so it was apparent that something was not right with his pitching arsenal when at home.
But a trade would give him a new home venue, which could make all the difference. Atlanta, if they are actually adamant about adding a starter, should inquire about Luis Severino.
