The Atlanta Braves, who have been one of the best teams in Major League Baseball, should welcome some more reinforcements soon as starter Spencer Strider and catcher Sean Murphy are wrapping up their rehab assignments.
On Tuesday, the battery for the Braves’ Triple-A affiliate was Spencer Strider and Sean Murphy, and Strider dazzled in his first (and maybe only) AAA start this season.

Spencer Strider dazzled in his rehab assignment on Tuesday with AAA Gwinnett.
Mark Bowman wrote (on April 21), “Strider: 1 H, 1 BB, 7 Ks through four scoreless (59 pitches) for Gwinnett tonight. They might let him face another batter for another up-down. He was 96-98 multiple times during the third and fourth innings. Seven of the nine hardest pitches he’s thrown have come after the 2nd.”
He followed that message up with this one:
“Strider did come back out for the fifth. He added his eighth strikeout and then exited, having thrown 65 pitches. He can aim for 80-plus pitches during his next rehab start. The one hit he allowed was a bloop single and his walk came on a close 3-2 pitch.”
Strider should return to the Braves rotation soon and will make his much-anticipated season debut. A big part of his struggles last season had to do with the loss of velocity, but after another year removed from UCL surgery, he seems to have gotten some of it back, plus he has worked in some new pitches.
