Not many people had the Boston Red Sox starting the season 1-5 on their bingo card six games into the season. However, after a season-opening win over the Cincinnati Reds, they have dropped five straight. They closed out their season-opening road trip being swept by the Houston Astros.
Boston returns home to Fenway Park for their home opener on Friday afternoon against the San Diego Padres. There is nowhere to go but up for Alex Cora and his team. If you are looking to pinpoint the problem for Boston’s start, you’ll have to point to a number of areas.

Starting pitching, struggling hitters, fielding errors, the bullpen, you name it, there have been issues. One player who has struggled mightily to begin the 2026 season is rising star Roman Anthony. After being swept in Houston, Anthony had a message for his teammates as they look to turn the page to their home opener against the Padres.
Boston Red Sox Star Roman Anthony Sends a Message to Teammates
Again, there is nowhere to go but up for the Red Sox beginning Friday. They are tied with the Athletics and Chicago White Sox with a 1-5 record to begin the season. That’s not the company you want to join at any point in a season when it comes to records. However, Boston needs to take things one day at a time and avoid the outside noise, according to Anthony.
“The last thing we can do is listen to the outside noise and panic,” said Anthony. “We expect to win every game and to win every series that we can. Anything other than that to us is a failure. … (But) there’s got to be some sort of understanding, like, ‘Hey, boys, we’re going to be all right. We’ve played two series here.”
That comment was likely said in anticipation of the welcome the Red Sox could get on Friday from a passionate fanbase. It’s Opening Day at Fenway Park, and maybe the fans won’t be that vocal about the frustrating start to the season. Or maybe not.
Boston Red Sox Look for a Fresh Start at Fenway Park
Again, there is nowhere to go for the Red Sox but up. You can’t win a division title or clinch a playoff spot in March and April; however, you can certainly put yourself behind the eight-ball early in the season. Boston is doing that.
Anthony came off the bench and homered against Houston. Is that the at-bat that is going to get him going? Slumps are going to happen, and if they are going to happen, let them happen early in the season rather than toward the end of the season.
Sonny Gray will get the ball against San Diego, looking to turn the Red Sox’s fortunes around back in Boston. Pitching, hitting, and defense are the name of the game in baseball, and so far, Cora’s team has been unable to put that together for nine innings since Opening Day. The Padres have their own issues, and maybe they are the perfect team for Boston to get things going against. If not, things could get interesting over the weekend for the Red Sox.
