Blue Jays Receive Crushing George Springer Injury Update

After coming up just short in the 2025 World Series, the Toronto Blue Jays are back in action in 2026, but the new season hasn’t exactly gotten off to a great start for the team. Not only have they posted a middling 6-7 record through their first 13 games, but now, it looks like they are going to be without designated hitter George Springer for an extended period of time.

In the Blue Jays’ contest against the Minnesota Twins on Saturday afternoon, Springer was pulled from the game early after he fouled a ball off his left foot. The hope among fans was that the move was simply precautionary, but it turns out it was not, as Springer has suffered a serious injury that will likely send him to the injured list in the near future.

George Springer Suffers Broken Left Big Toe

Since signing with the Blue Jays back in 2021, Springer has been one of the anchors of their lineup. While it seemed like he was trending in the wrong direction in 2024 after he hit just .220, a move to designated hitter last year helped Springer bounce back, as he starred for the team on its run to the World Series (.309 BA, 32 HR, 84 RBI, 18 SB, .959 OPS).

While he isn’t necessarily the player he was during the prime of his career with the Houston Astros, Springer is still one of the better hitters on Toronto’s roster. He hasn’t exactly gotten off to a great start this season (.189 BA, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 1 SB, .661 OPS), but that’s nothing worth worrying about this early into the new year.

A new injury appears set to disrupt any sort of momentum Springer had been generating, though. Anytime a player is pulled from a game early, fans are going to be concerned, and it turns out they have good reason to be. That’s because Springer has suffered a broken left big toe, with the ailment almost certainly set to require an extended stay on the injured list.

GettyBlue Jays get concerning news on George Springer.

Injuries have already defined Toronto’s season, and we aren’t even a month into the campaign. While pitchers Jose Berrios and Trey Yesavage appear close to returning to action, Cody Ponce and Bowden Francis are both already out for the year. In the lineup, catcher Alejandro Kirk and third baseman Addison Barger have both hit the injured list early in the season, too.

Springer will likely join them, forcing manager John Schneider to scramble to find a proper replacement at the designated hitter position. Myles Straw filled in for Springer on Saturday, and he could continue to see time in the lineup, whether it be at the DH spot or in the outfield. After suffering a 7-4 defeat against the Twins on Saturday, the Blue Jays will look to pick up a series victory in the rubber match on Sunday afternoon.
