Blue Jays Make Moves Amid Alejandro Kirk Injury

The Toronto Blue Jays will have to go a long time without their star catcher, Alejandro Kirk.

The two-time All-Star catcher was injured on a foul tip on April 3 against the Chicago White Sox.

They have made a subsequent move that makes it apparent Kirk will miss significant time. According to Mitch Bannon of The Athletic, Kirk will go on the Injured List with a left thumb fracture.

According to Hazel Mae of MLB International, the Blue Jays are recalling catching prospect Brandon Valenzuela in a corresponding move.

Keegan Matheson of MLB.com previously reported that Valenzuela was in the locker room and would be active for today’s game.

Who Is Brandon Valenzuela of the Toronto Blue Jays?

Valenzuela, according to MLB Pipeline, is Toronto’s No. 24 prospect and second-best catching prospect in their system.

The San Diego Padres originally signed Valenzuela out of Mexico in 2017. He had been fighting through the minors for seven seasons.

Then, Toronto dealt Valenzuela for Will Wagner at the 2025 Trade Deadline.

In 2025, between Double-A with San Diego and Triple-A with Toronto, Valenzuela hit .224 with 15 home runs and a .692 OPS.

In his minor league career, Valenzuela has hit .242 with 48 home runs and a .712 OPS. He profiles as a switch-hitter who is well-balanced from both sides. While he has uninspiring hitting numbers, Valenzuela makes up for it with his defensive work.

Valenzuela was in major-league spring training this year and performed well, batting .304 with a home run in 27 plate appearances.

According to MLB.com, he is “an impressive receiver and manages the pitching staff well.”

However, his best trait is his throwing arm. He projects to be above-average at throwing out base stealers and has thrown out over 30% of runners in three of his last four seasons.

Catcher is pretty much the only position in the sport where you can be defense-first and still make a major impact and carve out a long career.

His ceiling could very well be a good backup catcher, which is hard to find. Valenzuela is entering his age-25 season and still has plenty of potential to make a mark in the majors.

What Does the Kirk Injury Mean for the Team?

Kirk’s impact is obviously huge. In 2025, he was an All-Star and a huge proponent of a team that was very close to winning the World Series. This injury could have a timeline of four to six weeks.

That season, he hit .282 with 15 home runs and a .769 OPS. In 2026, he wasn’t off to a great start.

In 22 plate appearances, Kirk had a .150/.227/.350 slash line, all of which would represent career lows.

For now, Tyler Heineman will take the reins as the starting catcher, with Valenzuela behind him. In his seven-year major league career, Heineman has hit .243/.324/.327 with just five home runs.

So far in 2026, Heineman has three hits in eight plate appearances. Toronto fans will have to hope that Heineman and Valenzuela can carry the load while Kirk is out for the foreseeable future.
