Blue Jays Get Hit With Surprising Worst-Case Kyle Tucker-Bo Bichette Scenario

The Toronto Blue Jays can add Kyle Tucker to their list of losses to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Following their Game 7 World Series loss to the Dodgers, the Blue Jays got news of Tucker’s decision. According to MLB insider Jeff Passan, he has agreed to a deal with the Dodgers.

“BREAKING: Star outfielder Kyle Tucker and the Los Angeles Dodgers are in agreement on a free agent contract, sources tell ESPN,” Passan wrote late on January 15, 2026.

Insider Robert Murray has the details of the deal.

“Free-agent outfielder Kyle Tucker and the Los Angeles Dodgers are in agreement on a four-year, $240 million contract,” Murray wrote on January 15th, 2026. “According to sources familiar with the deal. It includes an opt-out after year two.”

However, this unfortunate news for the Blue Jays could mean that other good news could still happen before Spring Training. This good news being Bo Bichette.

Toronto Blue Jays Miss on Kyle Tucker

Despite adding big free agents in Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce, Tyler Rogers, and Kazuma Okamoto, the Blue Jays have struck out on Tucker. They were the rumored frontrunners to land the top free agent this winter, but ultimately came up short.

The Blue Jays were considered the favorites to sign Tucker, ahead of the Dodgers and New York Mets. Now, everything will change.

For starters, they don’t get to add a player who had a fabulous 2025 season. Last year, he hit 22 home runs, 73 RBIs, and stole 25 bases.

The Blue Jays have been linked to Ketel Marte, Cody Bellinger, Yoan Moncada, and Bichette. Will the Blue Jays revisit any of these players in the coming days?

Can the Blue Jays Still Sign Bo Bichette?

Now that Tucker is off the board, are the Blue Jays able to bring back Bichette? The path back might not be guaranteed.

The Philadelphia Phillies are the favorites to land him. However, Bob Nightengale recently said that Bichette is a fallback option for Toronto if they don’t get Tucker. Now that has come to pass, which opens up the door to a return to the Blue Jays.

Sadly for the Blue Jays, they have stiff competition. The New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Seattle Mariners, Los Angeles Angels, and Dodgers have all been linked to Bichette.

Who will win the Bichette sweepstakes? One rumor suggests that the Phillies are the frontrunners. This rumor suggests that the money and term has been ironed out. All that remains to be solidified are the opt-outs and no-trade clauses.

Blue Jays Done After Missing on Tucker?

As far as the ripple effect for the Blue Jays organization, one insider believes that one outfielder shouldn’t be concerned about sticking around Toronto.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic believes that Nathan Lukes can breathe easy now.

“The odd man out could have been left fielder Nathan Lukes, a league-average hitter and strong defender who turns 32 in July,” Rosenthal wrote late on January 15th. “But probably not now.”

Additionally, Rosenthal revealed what this means for the Blue Jays’ chances of a reunion with Bichette.

“Lukes should continue to play a valuable role, and Barger should continue to get at-bats in right field,” Rosenthal wrote. “If Bellinger goes back to the Yankees and Bichette signs with the Phillies, the rest of the Jays’ offseason likely will include only minor alterations.”

While Rosenthal believes that only “minor alterations” will likely happen, another insider remains more optimistic.

Shi Davidi of Sportsnet believes that the door is still open to signing Bichette.

“An agreement with Tucker would have signalled the end of the Blue Jays’ relationship with Bichette, the franchise cornerstone since reaching the majors in 2019,” Davidi wrote. “Who remains in free agency. But this may reopen a pathway for his return, even if it’s believed there’s a big financial gap with Bichette, who met with the Philadelphia Phillies this week.”

In the very least, the Blue Jays could up their offer to Bichette (if they have indeed offered him anything) and then let the chips fall where they may.

After going through the last two and a half months as the favorites to land Tucker, it’s time for the Blue Jays to regroup. This could mean adding Bichette or exploring another avenue to better the team.
