Bills Urged to Rehire Sean McDermott as DC

The Buffalo Bills parted ways with their beloved head coach of nine years, Sean McDermott, on Monday, January 19, and just over a week later, they promoted offensive coordinator Joe Brady to that head coach role.

Now, Brady is being tasked with filling out his staff, and he’s being urged to rehire, of all people, McDermott in the defensive coordinator role. On Wednesday, January 28, Brady and the Bills lost the team’s defensive coordinator for the 2025-26 season, Bobby Babich, to the Green Bay Packers, so the hunt is on for a new one.

“The Packers are hiring Bobby Babich as their defensive pass game coordinator/secondary, per source,” Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported in a post on X. “Babich had been with the Bills since 2017, serving as defensive coordinator the past two seasons. A key hire to new DC Jonathan Gannon’s staff.”

So, would the Buffalo Bills actually do this and rehire McDermott? It would be an unprecedented move. Here’s the noise being made about this idea.

Buffalo Bills Need a Defensive Coordinator, and Sean McDermott Has a Defensive Mind

On Tuesday, January 27, Gregg Rosenthal of the NFL Daily Podcast caused a stir online with a post on X stating, “If I’m Joe Brady, I am absolutely trying to hire Sean McDermott as my DC. it’s a good scheme fit with the players they have.”

Now, that’s a statement. He got plenty of attention for the idea, too. “McDermott’s defense is plug-and-play with Buffalo’s personnel: split-safety looks, disciplined zone match, pressure without selling out,” one follower said on X. “The roster already speaks that language. No teardown, no relearning curve.”

“Another positive for the bills, if Joe Brady doesn’t work out, McDermott could slide right in to being the interim head coach. Win win,” another added.

“Absolutely agree. Sean McDermott’s style perfectly complements Joe Brady’s vision and the roster,” one more said. “It could really elevate their defense.”

The post also got some laughing emojis sent its way. “This has to be one of the most ridiculous tweets ever,” one said.

It would be outside the norm for this to happen, but it’s fun to think about it.

Buffalo Bills Make Official Joe Brady Announcement

In the Buffalo Bills’ official announcement on Brady, they noted, “Joe Brady has agreed to terms to become Buffalo’s next head coach. Brady agreed to terms on a five-year deal and will be Buffalo’s 21st head coach. Brady was promoted to the head coaching job from within.”

The franchise added, “The new HC served as Buffalo’s offensive coordinator from 2024-25, as well as interim offensive coordinator for the final nine games of the 2023 season, including playoffs.”

Since becoming the Buffalo Bills’ offensive coordinator, the Bills averaged 29.6 points per game, 367.7 total yards per game, 145.4 rushing yards per game and 222.3 passing yards per game, according to team research.

Before heading over to Buffalo, Brady coached with the Carolina Panthers as their offensive coordinator from 2020 to 2021. His first position in the NFL was with the New Orleans Saints as an offensive assistant from 2017 to 2018.
