Bills Owner Takes Shot at Keon Coleman After Firing Sean McDermott

The Buffalo Bills have been busy in the wake of suffering a crushing 33-30 overtime defeat at the hands of the Denver Broncos in their divisional round matchup. After years of playoff failures, head coach Sean McDermott was fired in the wake of this defeat, and now, he’s getting dragged by his former team, with one of their own players, Keon Coleman, catching some strays in the process.

By firing McDermott and retaining general manager Brandon Beane, the Bills have raised quite a few eyebrows. Owner Terry Pegula is making it clear which side of the fence he stands on, and now that McDermott is gone, he hasn’t wasted much time blaming him for Buffalo’s recent struggles. In the process, he took aim at Coleman, who has endured a rough first two seasons in the NFL with the Bills.

Terry Pegula Blames Sean McDermott for Decision to Draft Keon Coleman

Back in 2017, McDermott and Beane were both hired to come in and work together to get Buffalo on the right track. The team immediately made it to the playoffs in their first year together before they selected Josh Allen with their first draft pick in 2018. Allen has since become an MVP-caliber player, which has helped turn the Bills into one of the top teams in the league.

And yet, not everything has been perfect for McDermott. While Buffalo has enjoyed a great deal of regular-season success, that hasn’t translated to the postseason. In the wake of his firing, reports have also surfaced suggesting that he and the rest of the Bills’ leadership group did not see eye-to-eye on the state of the team’s roster.

With McDermott gone, it’s clear who Buffalo felt was to blame for the team’s struggles. At a press conference on Wednesday, Pegula stepped up to defend Beane by claiming that McDermott pushed for the team to select Coleman in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, seemingly implying it was a mistake. Coleman, of course, is still on the Bills’ roster, and he likely won’t be too happy to see these comments.

“Bills owner Terry Pegula: ‘The coaching staff pushed for Keon (Coleman). He was not Brandon’s next choice. Brandon (Beane) was being a team player,’” Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network shared in a post on X.

The fact that Pegula is willing to call out Coleman in order to defend Beane is pretty telling. The Bills are likely going to make sweeping changes to their roster over the offseason in an effort to get themselves over the hump in 2026, and based on these comments, it doesn’t exactly sound like Coleman is going to be a part of their future plans.

There’s quite a bit of chaos unfolding in Buffalo right now, and how it plays out will be interesting to see. The team is only just beginning its search for a new head coach, but it’s fair to wonder if Pegula’s stark defense of Beane could dissuade potential candidates from taking the job. The Bills’ offseason has gotten off to a hectic start, and it hasn’t even been four full days since they were eliminated from the playoffs.
