Bills Make Roster Decision on Record-Breaking Rookie QB After Minicamp

The Buffalo Bills appear to be headed to training camp with their quarterback depth chart set.

The team brought in a pair of rookie quarterbacks for minicamp last weekend, including a record-setting signal-caller. But the team opted not to offer a contract to either of them, leaving the top three quarterbacks on the depth chart intact.

Bills Took Look at Quarterback Brady Olson

The Bills had invited rookie quarterback Brady Olson, who was coming off a record-setting career at Central Connecticut State University, to throw at rookie minicamp on Friday and Saturday. The Bills decided not to sign Olson after minicamp, though could take a look back later in the spring or early summer.

As the Bristol Press reported, Olson was excited about getting an invite from the Bills.

“It means a lot, super grateful for the opportunity and really excited to get to Buffalo,” Olson said.

Olson’s agent, Blaise Rosati of NXT ERA Partners, said the quarterback had hoped to be drafted, but understood it was a difficult year for quarterbacks.

“It was a tough draft for quarterbacks with a lot of talent still on the board when the draft ended,” Rosati said. “We’re excited for Brady to get his shot with an organization like the Bills. He’s put in the work to earn it, and we believe he can go in there, compete, and show he belongs. The work is just getting started!”

The Bills had also invited University of Buffalo quarterback Ta’Quan Roberson to minicamp, but he left without a contract as well. Roberson ended his seven-year college career at UB, completing 57.7% of his passes for 2,520 yards with 17 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Brian Dohn of 247 Sports shared praise for Roberson, especially his mobility.

“Size is a concern, but not a deal breaker,” Dohn wrote. “Maximizes height with arm angle. Good arm strength and spins ball well. Delivery is free and easy. Throws into tight windows. Gets through progressions. Smart and competitive. Comfortable in pocket. Reacts to pressure well and finds throwing lanes. Poised and composed. Good footwork. Mobile and can gain yards with feet. Recognizes mismatches on pre-snap reads. Drops ball low on delivery at times. Does not always stride into throws. Needs to improve accuracy, especially when throwing outside. Multi-year starter at Power 5 program. NFL free agent.”

The Bills have found success with UB players in the past, including linebacker Joe Andreesseen, who turned a rookie minicamp invite into a contract and a spot on the final 53-man roster in 2024.

Bills Stick With Regular Rotation at Quarterback

The Bills will have few surprises at quarterback as they head into training camp, with no competition for either of the top two spots. Former league MVP Josh Allen is expected to fully recover from offseason foot surgery but the time the team opens camp later in the summer, and Kyle Allen has returned to serve as his backup.

The Bills normally keep a third quarterback on their practice squad, with that job going to Shane Buechele. The Bills signed Buechele to a reserve/futures contract in February, opting not to draft any quarterbacks or sign free agents to compete for the job.
