The Buffalo Bills haven’t been afraid to make changes this offseason, and it seems like more changes will be made during the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft. While the addition of Joe Brady as the team’s new head coach is the biggest move the Bills have made this offseason, this is a completely different team across the board.
On defense, one new face is veteran defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who signed a one-year, $6 million contract with Buffalo in free agency. Gardner-Johnson has a history of filling several different roles in the secondary throughout his career, but according to Brady, it already sounds like he’s stepping up in one key department in a big way.
Joe Brady Sheds Light on C.J. Gardner-Johnson’s Role with the Bills
It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that, after replacing the outgoing Sean McDermott, Brady wanted to make some changes. One of the biggest items on his to-do list involved shoring up the secondary, particularly the safety room. That is precisely where Gardner-Johnson figures to factor in once the new season gets underway.
Gardner-Johnson has bounced around the league a bit over the past few years, as he’s spent time with four different teams in the past three seasons. In 2025, he split time with the Houston Texans and Chicago Bears, racking up 66 tackles, three sacks, two interceptions, four pass breakups, and one forced fumble. He wasn’t as effective as he was in 2024 with the Philadelphia Eagles, but switching teams midway through the season is always a difficult task.
Moving forward, Gardner-Johnson figures to fill a jack-of-all-trades role for Buffalo in its secondary. While his exact position will be determined down the line, for now, Gardner-Johnson has made a quick effort to emerge as a leader on the Bills’ new-look defense, and he’s quickly caught the attention of his new head coach.
“He loves to compete,” Brady said of Gardner-Johnson when speaking to reporters recently. “(He’s) done a great job in the weight room. You can hear him. The way the strength coach is talking about how he’s been setting a tone and leading, I was extremely excited that we were able to get him … Really excited about what he can do for this football team.”

The Bills struggled to find a reliable safety duo last season, but after signing Gardner-Johnson and Geno Stone in free agency, the team has a plethora of options at this spot. Cole Bishop seems set to reprise his role as a starter in 2026, with guys like Damar Hamlin and Jordan Hancock also set to factor into the mix.
Garnder-Johnson is known for being one of the most vocal players in the league, and you can bet Buffalo will be hoping his big personality shines now that he’s found his way to town. The Bills could make more additions to their secondary in the upcoming draft, but even if they do, Gardner-Johnson figures to be set to play a big role for his new team in 2026.
