Bills GM Brandon Beane Shares Big $10 Million Update Heading into Free Agency

The Buffalo Bills have been among the most active teams early on this offseason after crashing out of the playoffs earlier than expected once again in 2025. Joe Brady has taken over as the team’s new head coach, and he has completely revamped the coaching staff, giving the Bills a new look heading into the 2026 campaign.

Buffalo still has a lot of work to do, though, with an emphasis being placed on reinforcing the talent level of the roster. That work will fall largely on the shoulders of general manager Brandon Beane, and it sounds like he’s already hit the ground running, as he shared a big update regarding offensive lineman Spencer Brown‘s contract situation.

Brandon Beane Reveals Bills Restructured Spencer Brown’s Contract

When it comes to roster building during the offseason, the first order of business for many teams is to become cap compliant. The easiest way to achieve that involves finding players whose release would create cap savings for the team or negotiating restructured deals with key players that would see the money in their contracts get reallocated.

Brown was identified as a player whose deal needed work early in the offseason. After a stellar start to his career, Brown signed a four-year, $72 million contract with the Bills back in September 2024, and while he’s continued to play at a high level, his cap hit for the 2026 season was simply going to be too high.

In what is becoming a more and more common practice across the league, teams are backloading contracts in order to help their present salary cap situation. So while Buffalo will likely have to continue crossing this bridge with Brown in future seasons, it managed to find common ground with him on a restructured deal this offseason, with Beane revealing it will save the team over $10 million in cap space.

“It saves us a little over $10 million with the cap conversion of Spencer,” Beane said when speaking to reporters at the 2026 NFL Draft Combine. “I want to say $10.4 (million), but it’s something close to that. Don’t hold me to it.”

Bills Still Have Work to Do with Their Salary Cap Situation

When you have a superstar quarterback like Josh Allen signed to a massive six-year, $330 million contract like the Bills do, you have to be conscientious of the salary cap at all times. That leads to finding unique ways to save some money, and in this case, Brown was picked out as a logical candidate for a restructured contract.

Brown surely won’t be the only player who gets his deal reworked, and there will likely be a handful of veterans who get released if they can’t find common ground on a new contract with the Bills. In order for Buffalo to make the sort of upgrades it believes are necessary this offseason, it needs money at its disposal, which means Beane’s work in this department will be worth keeping tabs on over the next couple of weeks.
