Bears coach: RB Kyle Monangai ‘week-to-week’ after hurting knee

Bears running back Kyle Monangai seems to have avoided the worst-case scenario.

Coach Ben Johnson said Tuesday that he will be “week-to-week” with a knee injury that he suffered Sunday when he got tangled up with defensive tackle Grady Jarrett during a drill in which neither of them were wearing full pads.

The injury could have been much worse. Monangai limped off the field and Jarrett was emotional about the collision.

Johnson said Tuesday that he didn’t need to have a conversation with Jarrett, who is entering his 12th season in the NFL and second with the Bears.

Roschon Johnson and Salvon Ahmed had been behind Monangai during training camp and figure to get the majority of his work in the weeks moving forward. Johnson led the team in carries and rushing yards Saturday against the Browns, while Ahmed scored on a 49-yard screen pass.

The Bears’ season opener is more than 3 1/2 weeks away.
