Bay Area News Group boys athlete of the week: Jaxson Bettencourt, Archbishop Mitty soccer

Archbishop Mitty soccer player Jaxson Bettencourt is the Bay Area News Group’s boys athlete of the week for Feb. 19-24.

In online voting that ended at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Bettencourt had 37.07% to finish ahead of Dougherty Valley basketball player Kenny Cloud, who was second at 35.29%.

Congratulations to all the candidates for this week’s recognition.

Bettencourt, a junior, provided all the scoring Mitty needed when he put a shot past the goalkeeper on a corner kick pass from Manuel Portillo in the 61st minute. Mitty went on to beat St. Francis 2-0 for the Central Coast Section Division I championship.
