Baseball stunner: No. 1 Valley Christian stumbles at Sacred Heart Cathedral

Sacred Heart Cathedral 6, No. 1 Valley Christian 3

Perfection is no more for Valley Christian, the San Jose powerhouse that had dominated most of its opponents during the early stages of this season.

In the opener of a two-game West Catholic Athletic League series on Tuesday at Sacred Heart Cathedral, the home team erupted for five runs in the third inning to erase a three-run deficit and held on for the shocking triumph against MaxPreps’ 11th-ranked team in the country.

Tate Medicoff’s three-run homer off ace Quinten Marsh ignited the big inning for SHC after Valley Christian scored three in the top half of the frame.

Aaron Louis added a hit and two RBIs and Barclay Ovalle had a hit and scored twice for SHC, which had lost eight in a row to Valley Christian dating to 2017 and was 3-33 against the Warriors in the MaxPreps era, which began in 2004.

Brock Ketelsen, Kole Laubach and Nathan Choi each knocked in a run for Valley, which had moved from No. 2 to No. 1 in the Bay Area News Group rankings earlier Tuesday.

Zach Stallworth pitched 5 2/3 innings for SHC. Dylan Adelman struck out four in 1 1/3 scoreless innings to finish off the visitors.

Valley fell to 9-1, 2-1. SHC is 7-4, 1-2.

The series wraps up on Friday at Valley Christian.

No. 6 Bellarmine 13, No. 9 Archbishop Mitty 1

Bellarmine spotted host Mitty a 1-0 advantage in the first inning, then scored the next 13 runs to overpower the Monarchs in a WCAL game.

Evan Tavarez had four hits, including a home run and a double, and four RBIs and Dash Knight doubled, singled and knocked in four to lead the way for the Bells (6-1, 2-1).

Bellarmine’s Apolo Lapiz pitched four scoreless innings, scattering three hits and striking out two, and Matthew Vlahos and Ryan Bays each drove in two runs.

Mitty slipped to 6-4-1, 1-1-1.

No. 7 St. Ignatius 4, St. Francis 3 (8 innings)

Finn Whalen’s home run to left with one out in the eighth gave St. Ignatius a walk-off victory as the Wildcats overcame a 3-0 deficit in the sixth to prevail against St. Francis in WCAL play.

SI scored two in the sixth, then one in the seventh on Rocco Giometti’s two-out, run-scoring single to left.

Archer Horn also had an RBI for host St. Ignatius, which improved to 8-2, 2-1.

Jedd Chang had two hits, including a double, and scored a run and Gino Cappellazzo, Tanner Wall and Luke DeVine each had an RBI for St. Francis (3-5-1, 0-2-1).

No. 8 Serra 6, Archbishop Riordan 1

Joey Damelio had a hit and two RBIs and Sammy Rivas, Ian Josephson and Michael Perazzo each drove in a run as Serra turned back host Riordan in a WCAL game.

Braden Agosta allowed an unearned run and two hits in five innings for Serra (8-1, 3-0).

Matteo Matteucci doubled and knocked in a run for Riordan, which fell to 3-6-2, 0-3.

Branham 9, Live Oak 7

Branham scored six runs in the home half of the fourth to erase a 6-2 deficit and went on to defeat Live Oak in a Blossom Valley Athletic League Mt. Hamilton Division game.

Robert Winsor doubled twice, scored twice and knocked in three runs and Devin Gonzales had three hits and an RBI to lead Branham (8-2, 2-1).

Live Oak fell to 4-5, 1-2.

Berean Christian 8, Miramonte 2

Justin Muegge and Damon Neu each doubled twice and Neu and Colton Swift had two RBIs apiece to lead unbeaten Berean Christian to a victory at Miramonte in Diablo Athletic League Valley Division play.

Luke Upshaw allowed two runs (one earned) and struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings for Berean, which improved to 8-0, 2-0.

Miramonte is 3-5, 2-1.

Piedmont 12, St. Joseph Notre Dame 7

Piedmont built a 12-0 lead through 6 1/2 innings and then withstood a seven-run seventh by the home team to prevail in a nonleague game.

Will Parker and Brandon Dicke each had two RBIs for Piedmont, which improved to 6-1.

SJND is 2-4.

Santa Clara 4, Fremont-Sunnyvale 0

Drew Diffenderfer pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and zero walks to lead Santa Clara to a victory at home over Fremont in Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division play.

Santa Clara scored all of its runs in the fourth, two on a hit by Jacob Horne. The senior finished 3 for 4.

The Bruins improved to 5-6, 3-1. Fremont is 3-6, 1-3.

Softball

No. 1 St. Francis 11, Monterey 0 (5 innings)

Hayden Hummel hit two home runs and finished with four RBIs and Shannon Keighran struck out 10 as St. Francis rolled to a mercy-rule victory over visiting Monterey in nonleague play.

The Lancers also got a double and three RBIs from Rebecca Quinn and two hits and two RBIs from Keighran as they improved to 6-0.

Monterey is 5-2.

Dublin 18, No. 3 Foothill 13

Dublin scored five in the visitor’s half of the seventh to break a 13-13 tie as the Gaels defeated Foothill in an East Bay Athletic League game.

Tanaya Barrett had two doubles, a home run and a single and drove in four, AJ Avelar had two hits and three RBIs and Arianna Cooper had a double and knocked in three to lead Dublin (3-2, 2-1).

Marissa Anderson, Kaycie Burdick and Naima Braham each homered for Foothill (7-2, 2-1).

No. 11 Livermore 5, No. 5 Amador Valley 4 (8 innings)

Kymber Dao’s bunt single in the bottom of the eighth brought home the winning run as Livermore edged Amador Valley in EBAL play.

Kaylee Davis had a home run, double, single and two RBIs for Amador Valley (4-2, 1-1).

Liberty 4, No. 6 San Ramon Valley 3 (9 innings)

Paige Breitstein’s single to right knocked in the winning run in the home half of the eighth as Liberty prevailed over San Ramon Valley in a nonleague game.

Taylor Jennings, a freshman, had three hits and an RBI for Liberty (4-2).

SRV is 5-3.

Carlmont 6, No. 12 Hillsdale 5

Izzy Won went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs and Molly Brand was 3 for 4 with two RBIs to propel Carlmont past previously undefeated Hillsdale in Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division play.

Claire Shelton drove in two runs for Hillsdale (8-1, 1-1).

Carlmont is 2-4, 1-1.

Valley Christian 12, The King’s Academy 1 (5 innings)

Talia Haskins and Makenzie Leon each drove in three runs and Makenna Sieling and Lana Escarcega knocked in two runs apiece to power Valley Christian to a nonleague rout at home over The King’s Academy.

Sieling pitched all five innings for Valley (6-4).

TKA slipped to 10-2.
