The Baltimore Orioles are in the midst of their four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Amid the chaos, the Orioles have provided a new update on Samuel Basallo.
According to Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Banner (via X), Basallo is now set for his rehab assignment tomorrow down in Triple-A Norfolk, per Craig Albernaz.
Kostka reports that Basallo “hit live BP against Felix Bautista in Sarasota today.”

Basallo has been sitting on the IL since July 22. He is sidelined due to right shoulder inflammation with an undetermined return date.
As of Aug. 14, his injury report states, “Resumed throwing Aug. 7, throwing on back-to-back days from 90 feet. Hit off tee on both Aug. 9 and 10. Hit in batting cage for first time on Aug. 14 at Tropicana Field.”
Basallo’s last game appearance took place on July 19 when Baltimore faced the Houston Astros.
Before his injury occurred, the 22-year-old catcher was slashing .241/.305/.450 with a .755 OPS and 16 homers through 86 games. He’s recorded nine doubles, one triple and 46 RBIs.
This is only his second season playing in the big leagues. He made his debut with the organization in August 2025.
Now having the opportunity to test his shoulder in his upcoming rehab assignment, his recovery timeline should become clearer.
Basallo is far from alone on the IL right now. He is still joined by notable names including Ryan Mountcastle (left foot fracture/oblique strain), Félix Bautista (right shoulder surgery), Ryan Hesley (right elbow inflammation) and Blaze Alexander (left hand fracture), among a handful of others.

In the American League East, the Orioles find themselves in last place with an overall record of 59-63.
They are just below the Toronto Blue Jays (60-64), but a large margin away from the Boston Red Sox (65-57), the New York Yankees (68-54) and Tampa Bay (74-47).
Now playing the Rays in a long series, watching Baltimore defeat Tampa Bay 6-5 on Friday was quite exhilarating. But now, they have three more games to go if they want to make a clean sweep.
Their next clash is scheduled for Saturday at 6:10 p.m. ET. This stretch is being held at Tropicana Field.
Once this series wraps up, the Orioles will return home to Oriole Park at Camden Yards to host the Yankees for three games.
At the time of this writing, FanGraphs’ MLB Playoff Odds give Baltimore a 14.9% chance of making the playoffs and a 0.6% chance of winning the World Series.
Of course, the Rays lead the division with a 10.3% chance of winning the World Series this year.
Overall, this has been a year full of hiccups for the Orioles. Between inconsistent performances and an injury-plagued organization, Baltimore has not been associated with success.
Having said that, finishing off the season on a high note should remain a top priority.
