Lt. Gov. Dianne Primavera verbally declared a disaster in Weld County for an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza.
The verbal declaration issued Thursday night allows state agencies to continue to coordinate disease mitigation, response and recovery efforts, according to a news release from the governor’s office. Avian flu is severe, has a high mortality rate and may occasionally affect people, according to the USDA.
Primavera is acting governor while Gov. Jared Polis is in Washington, D.C., to attend a Colorado River negotiation meeting.
This is a developing story.
