AUSD Notes: Highlighting the pursuits of Alameda schools’ students, staff

The AUSD’s last day of school will be June 6, and high school graduations and middle school promotions will take place June 5-7. Alameda’s Adult School will hold its ceremony June 3. You can see the full schedule of graduations and promotions online at bit.ly/3UjQvOz.

What’s happening this summer? The AUSD will once again offer its “Algebra Re-Take” summer session to rising 10th-graders who received a D or F in algebra this year. The class is designed to help students get a more solid footing in algebra, bring their grades up and improve their chances of math success during their high school career.

The AUSD will also offer a free summer learning session for students who qualify for free and reduced-cost meals, are homeless or are foster youth, as well as an extended school year program for students who receive special education services and have summer learning in their education plans.

The school district’s construction team will be busy with six projects this summer: building the temporary campus at the site of the former Lum Elementary School; beginning interior demolition at Wood Middle School; working on Alameda High School’s new swim center and modernizing its Kofman Auditorium; constructing new athletic fields for Encinal High School; and upgrading the heating, ventilating, air conditioning and electrical systems at the Longfellow Campus (which houses Island High School and the Alameda Child Development Center).

We are excited to see these plans come to fruition and grateful to Alameda voters for approving the Measure B facilities bond in 2022. Speaking of the Alameda Child Development Center, the community is hosting a small celebration there this week at 5:30 p.m. Friday to celebrate the center’s new name, sign and coordinator of early childhood education, Jill Hunter.

The celebration will feature a few remarks by staff from the center and the AUSD, along with performances and activities for students and families. The public is welcome to join!
